What is concsidered a "spinner"? Is it the velocity of the roll that determines it being one.

What is considered a "good spinner"? Does performance have to do with it besides roll& depth?

The word "spinner" denotes that a bird possess all of the desirable traits of a Birmingham Roller. Depth, velocity, frequency, and style.

Just my thoughts

I think you should of asked what is considered a Birmingham Roller.
I class my birds into 4 groups.
The first is a term I use to describe any birds which is just straight flying - a COMMIE/SCRUB
The second is a term I use to describe any birds which isn't rolling yet - a TUMBLER
The third is a term I use to describe any birds which is a average performer - a ROLLER
The third is a term I use to describe any birds which is a spinner - a BIRMINGHAM ROLLER

I may call a bird a SCRUB one week, then call it a ROLLER the next week, then if it proves out 2 years later a BIRMINGHAM ROLLER...
I have just pencilled down two such birds last month. They are ideally as good as you can get them. Anything better would be a Champion.

Man, it can be confusing can't it? Right now, 50% of all my young birds are still just TUMBLERS

P.S. All of my birds are Birmingham Roller in name only until they pan out and prove their worth to carry the name as a performer. Otherwise, a commie or tumbler or roller will do for the time being.

Jay,
I term all my tail riders, flippers, slow rolling birds - TUMBLERS. Is that what a Tumbler does?

There was a quote, I'm not sure what were the actual words but it went something like this,(not all rollers are spinners, not all spinners are desirable stock). I am not trying to sturr things up, but just wanted to know some of the reasons why, if a spinner has all the desirable traits, how could it not be desirable stock? Could it be "type" for one?

Some of the best spinners do not do well in the breeding loft. Many times they produce off spring that are not quality birds.

Some of the most prominent producers in many family's histories were birds that did not, themselves, do well in the air. However they were bred from birds that did. Following the gene pool, and continuing with ones' decision of breeding strategy, a "non-performer" could and has produced some of the best competition birds and stock birds. Yes indeed - it's a tricky game and a slippery slope....

I see, so one should try pairing the spinner up with a different hen?

ah, maybe. Sometimes your best hen and best cock (air proven) will give you spinners. As soon as you find that they don't, break them up to pair with another.

By and by you will find generally your best produces best.....generally.

I probably made that clear as mud (lol)

usually small wing loading 7 1/4 to 8 1/4
velosity faster than any H STYLE ROLLER
CIRCULAR FORM FROM ANY LINE OF SIGHT BASEBALLS

Same here. We all would appreciate it if you enter full sentences when posting and fully explain your point view. You appear to have good input and ideas and if you just make them clear we can respond to your posts adequately. Thanks

I think Jim needs either his meds or a secretary. Maybe lower gears in his transmission.

In answer to the original question I think a spinner is a bird who will score points in a fly. No specific quantity just being part of a scorable turn should qualify it.

My personal opinion is a bird who makes me give an indication I noticed it. Raised eyebrow,or a Tim Taylor grunt, sometimes an outright exclamation, "Damn that was sweet!!"
