I have banded five so far, they are 2 weeks old. The biggest test is tonite when the temp down to 15. They are too big for the hens to cover entirely. The one I am really worried about is the single chick. I might go and get one of those little elec heaters from Walmart. I wrapped the front in a tarp to keep out the wind. I hope I am not starting over on Monday. YITS Kenny

Hey, Kenny, good luck with the cold. I've lost two little Masons already; but it wasn't what I imagined it would be. These little geezers just never grew. They wriggled and squirmed in their separate nests, looking as lively as they should, but whilst their respective nestmates grew and grew, these two didn't. When they died, they only looked a few days old, but they were actually about 10. It caught me by surprise because they were well covered all the time. They obviously weren't well, but I don't know what it was.
However, their big siblings have done very well, despite the cold. I've had nest felt in the bowl, then I added woodshavings when it got really cold, then I just hoped. Fortunately, the parents haven't tried for a second round yet, so they're still doing their stint with these youngsters. Once the youngsters were about 12 days old, the parents would leave them in the nest on their own for certain periods during the day. It's as if they know that once the temperature rises a little and the youngsters are quite well feathered, there's no real reason to sit them all the time. Then, as it darkens and the cold starts to bite, the parents are back in the nest again.
We're not as cold as you in England (but cold enough to freeze the water), so I hope all goes well for you. Tell you what, though, I'm bloody sick of winter.

I have banded 8 so far and I have 6 that are just about ready to be banded. and two more pair on eggs.....Kenny, I would for sure...get the electric eater from wal-mart...anything to keep the chill off. You will be suprised...if the hens cover them even though they are big....It was cold her a couple weeks ago and The hen started sitting on them again...It was funny as hell..I don't think her feet were on the ground..LOL
