I think what you are seeing are feather mites. They live off the stem of the feather. There are several ways to kill them and keep them off your birds. Products that you can put in their bath water include bath salts (from Foy's Pigeon Supplies or Global Pigeon Supplies), Twenty Mule Team Borax, and ivermectrin (given internally or in bath water)(see instructions on the bottle). The easiest and fastest to get would be the twenty mule team borax (grocery store) Just put about a tablespoon per gallon of water to be used in the bath pans. Another item to consider would be pest strips to hang in your loft. The loft must be semi closed for this to be effective. Some of the other guys might have something else that has worked for them (maybe even better) You might also put a little Seven Dust in and around the nest bowls before the young hatch. The dust would not be good for them if they are already hatched.

Nothing. All those medications for mites are developed not to harm the birds if they drank the water that is mixed with.

I have been using these items in the bath water for many years and have actually seen them drink some of the water. It is completely safe for your birds...and it works great!!!

I purchased some Permctrian II a while back for pesticide to dip the birds but didn’t get to use it. Since it is so cold around here and the snow, the birds tend to lose on their weekly bathing. So, here is what I do to combat the pesticide problems. I mix Permctrian II in the proper amounts with water and fill a spray bottle. When I go to the loft, I spry the birds with it and the birds like the water sprayed on them. They even left their wings up for me and they know the drill. Doing it once a week or so, keeps the birds pesticide free always.

"those long bugs that usually stays on the birds tails and wings" are NOT mites. They are common feather lice. Go to a pigeon supply website and you'll find plenty of products to get rid of them.
