I really do not have confidence in my feed blend for my kit birds. I do not believe I am getting the performance I want.

Can I poll you guys with the following questions:

1. Your daily (maintenance) feed mixture for your kit birds?

2. Changes you make in preparation for competition day?

Thanks,Nick

Nick,

during the Winter I will use regular pigeon mix by Winners Cup...the standard peas, corn, milo, wheat, sauflower..you know the standard...when I feed this mix..the performance is just OK! But it keeps them warmer. I always yo-yo feed the A team...Fly..rest..rest...fly. 20 birds..2 cups...1.5 cups...1 cup. During the summer I trim it down just a littel bit more. When The weather gets better...I mix my own mix. I use 28% pellet, wheat, milo and sauflower mix. I mix 50/50 wheat milo 5 parts to 1-1.5 parts pellet...and sauflower as a treat in the mix. It took me a long time to develop the right mixture for my birds. I will usually feed my mix for the first fly day..the rest day I will feed the mix or wheat milo only based on the birds condition and the last day is always wheat and milo only. Nick...the day you came over...I had been using my mix for about 2 weeks...it really brings it out.

To prepare for a comp...at about 10 days out...I will fly for 4 days straight on straight wheat and milo 50/50...just enough to fly about 30-45 minutes then I rest 1 day...fly 2 days with wheat/ milo ...then I rest 2 days and feed my y0-y0 schedule with my mix the first day with the above amounts and then next two feedings on rest day is strainght wheat and milo. They really come out of the shoot strong..because they have been flying non-stop and it really gets them amped up when they rest for two days...and then that one day shot of protein..gives them the energy to roll hard and then the wheat and milo keeps them low and butterfly flying. When you were over that day nick...it was just a regular yo-yo feeding.

I have found that the birds will start going a little stiff after the 4 days in a row.....then you rest the one...and they come out a little better...and then a little stiff again...and you really start thinking to yourself...oh man they lost the roll..I am screwed...then you give the shot of protein and the two days rest..and they usually come out on fire...but some times...they make you look dumb!!!lol!!

Straight wheat or wheat/peas/milo. It depends on how much each team has been getting flown and what stage of development they are in.

2. Changes you make in preparation for competition day?
For young kits I don't change their feed. If I do it generally messes them up.
For the older kits, I mainly use straight wheat leading up to a fly, provided i put fat on them in prior weeks. I'll slowly cut the amount down as the days progress. Then the last feeding they will get show mix which has about nine different seeds in it.

The mix i use is DOVE MIX but i mix in austrian peas the small green ones. works with one year, to older birds. The last week before your fly date. But if you have no quality in the roll no mount of grains or chemicals will help there performance.
