I have just gotten back into flying rollers after several years away from the hobby. Have a young kit (10 birds) just getting started. They are flying about 10 minutes and are starting to kit and tumble some. Have been flying them for about ten days or so. Also have three pair of breeders from the families of Mr. Neibel, Jerry Higgins, and Randy Gibson (Most indirectly). I am hoping that this combination will work for me. I read in the All Roller Matrix about the apple cider vinigar, and was wondering what some of you guys think of it, do you use it, and how often? I raised flying rollers for many years before, but never in competition flying. It is my goal to eventually get into competition. I would appreciate your thoughts.

I use it once a month. I find that it helps the digestive tract and helps them to properly digest all nutriants. Kinda like us eating yogurt.............

I give my Rollers ACV in their water every day- 1/2 teaspoon to a gallon of water. They stay healthy. Their grain is a 18% baby pig pellet--very small size pellet, in winter they receive some popcorn.

I give ACV to all my pigeons, show or flying, every other watering. I believe it is one of the most crucial supplements that a person can give to their birds.

Over here the birds get it 4-5X/week. I have a 1L bottle with ACV and another with ACV and crushed fresh garlic cloves. Never a sick one here.....knock on keyboard keys.

PVL, Where do you live? I live in Georgia. I give ACV to my birds six days per week. I give them clean water once per week. Seems to prevent diseases...I hope. Thanks for your input.

Where do you guys get your ACV? I get mine at the grocery store. I'm not sure if this is best. It is natural vinegar but it has been watered down so it contains 5% acidity. Is this ok? Or is there a better product somewhere? Thanks

Swamp Fox,

Okay....I'll fess up. Besides ACV 4-5 X a week my birds get Pro Bios 1X week and clear fresh water on other day/days. I also offer a vitamin/mineral powder in a bowl or another vitamin/mineral additive in their water about every other week. Been working here in the 50th state very well.
I buy my ACV from the local Costco Warehouse, Heinz brand, 1T-3/4 gal.

Thanks PVL. I use a product called Primalac and alternate it with Health Guard. These are health products which contain pro bios (beneficial gut bacteria). I also use a product called Avivite (good for feather, egg hatchability, etc.,) Seems to be working well at present along with the ACV.

I'm not a big proponent of ACV,I think its a waste of money, especially for the health store stuff.Clean fresh water is the primary drink, along with the occasional cocktail of electrolytes or red cell or pro-bios.When the waterers get that slightly murky smell,I add about 5 drops of nolvasan per gallon.About once a month or more,I disinfect waterers with a cap full of bleach for cleaning purposes and thuroughly rinse out and refill with fresh water to follow.I donot add anything but fresh water for 2 weeks following a disinfective cleaning.
The ACV is not as popular with racing homer guys,a large percentage of them do 5 to 10 drops of bleach per gal.It seems as though fancy pigeon guys like the ACV,I guess for the added mineral content.
Preventative vaccination [PMV, Sal-bac.,pox]ranks higher on my list than ACV,I think ACV is a variable on how it intereacts with bacterial disease. While pigeon specific vaccinations are proven and a part of the most serious fanciers programs.Ask someone like Mike Ganus who is a millionaire off the pigeon sport ACV OR pigeon specific vaccinations,my money would be on the psv.I do not dis agree with the ACV guys, but my time and money is on a non-variable program.Just my opinion....ALOHA,Todd

Brian,

I agree with your assessment of ACV. I have talked to many fanciers that use it exclusively (other than PMV vaccinations of course) with great success. Overall it is a lot less expensive than all the other vitamins and medicines out there in my opinion. It is also good for us to drink! You mentioned you give it to your show and fly birds. Where and how do you show your birds. Is it what used to be called "dual purpose" shows. Is that what you are referring to? Just curious.
