Kenny, you know that to use the Mee article as a breeding instruction is not the way Pensom would advise. Best to best "regardless of relationship" is what he said. (( YEA CLAY THAT IS WHAT HE SAID. WHAT DO YOU THINK PENSOM MEANT BY THAT, GO OUT AND COLLECT UP ANY GOOD ROLLER YOU FIND AND MATE THEM FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE? I TAKE WHAT PENSOM SAID TO MEAN MATE BEST TO BEST REGARDLES OF HOW CLOSE OR DISTANT THE RELATTIONSHIP WITHIN YOUR FAMILY. CLAY I HOLD THESE QUOTES BY MR. PENSOM THAT HE THOUGHT ALONG THESE LINES ALSO.
QUOTE ""MY EXPERIENCE HAS TAUGHT ME THAT THE BEST ALL-AROUND SPINNERS COME IN THE BLEW CHEC PATTERN, WITH RED CHECQUER AND DUN CLOSE UP. SINCE CLOSE BREEDING HAS TO BE INDULGED IN, IT IS TO BE EXPECTED THAT ONE COLOR WILL RUN THROUGH THE STRAIN AND ULTIMATELY THESE BASIC BLUE COLORS WILL PREDOMINATE. THIS IS AN ULTIMATE CONDITION WHICH CANNOT BE AVOIDED!!!! IT IS SIGNIFICANT THAT IN PURSUIT OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY ROLLERS ALL FANCIERS WILL END UP WITH THESE PATTERNS.
BREEDING FOR MARKINGS IS RIGHT OUT, FOR BY SO DOING ONE WOULD PRODUCE ROLLERS ONLY IN NAME.
I AM OF COURSE REFERRING TO THE ULTIMATE IN A HIGH QUALITY STRAIN WHICH IS THE RESULT OF A LIFE-TIME EXPERIENCE, AND WHEN A FANCIER CAN PICK AND CHOOSE JUST A FEW OF HIS BIRDS TO PRODUCE THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF IDEAL SPINNERS TO MEET HIS OWN REQUIREMENTS. FOR ANY FANCIER TO BREED BIRDS OF A COLOR AND MARKING TO MEET HIS TASTES HE WOULD NATURALLY HAVE TO BREED A LOT, IN FACT HE WOULD HAVE TO BREED FAR MORE THAN HE COULD SUCCESSFULLY MANAGE. IT IS POSSIBLE TO BREED ANY COLOR AND MARKING BUT THE RATIO OF GOOD BIRDS PRODUCED WOULD BE EXTREMELY SMALL!!!!!!! THIS IS THE DIFFERNCE BETWEEN A SUCCESSFUL STRAIN FOR IDEAL SPINNING AND THE PURSUIT OF COLORFUL PIGEONS. WHP..)) CLAY, MR. PENSOM WROTE THESE WORDS OF WISDOM ABOUT ROLLERS, BEFORE WE EVEN HAD TO THINK ABOUT CROSSING BREEDS FOR COLOR. GLAD TO SEE YOUR A PENSOM FAN..
You also know that you are in a league of your own with intense inbreeding for a relative long time. (( NO I DON'T KNOW THAT. I THINK IN THE PERSUIT OF A GOOD FAMILY OF BIRMINGHAM ROLLERS. MOST ALL WILL END UP WITH A TIGHT BRED FAMILY OF ROLLERS.. )) And you also know that most of the people who are following the Mee post most likely don't have the birds needed to make that work.(( AGREED, BUT MOST WILL JUST KEEP COLLECTING BIRDS AND NEVER DO THE WORK TO BUILD A FAMILY.. NOT BECUASE THEY DON'T HAVE THE BIRDS, BUT BECAUSE THEY EITHER DON'T CARE ABOUT BUILDING A FAMILY OR THEY JUST LIKE COLLECTING ROLLERS AND NEW COLORS.. ITS PURELY A HOBBY AND LIKE COLLECTING TRADING CARDS, THE HUNT AND SCORING A NEW BIRD FROM A NEW FANCIER OR NEW COLOR IS HALF THE HOBBY AND FUN TO THEM. NOT TO MENTION SO MANY ADVOCATE ROLLER COLLECTION AS THE BEST WAY OF BREEDING HIGH CLASS ROLLERS.. I HOPE YOU GUYS DON'T MIND THE FAMILY WAY BEING PUT OUT THERE FOR THOSE WHO CARE TO THINK ABOUT IT AS AN OPTION.
People new to competition rollers need to keep their options open and in the Genesis raise from all the "good" birds they have in stock or raise or can get.(( AGREED CLAY, AS LONG AS WHEN A NEWBIE FINDS THE GOODS,, HE STARTS TO BUILD A FAMILY AND QUITS COLLECTING BIRDS TO BURY THE GOODS UNDER!!)) regardless of family, for a few generations. (( AGREED CLAY, AS LONG ITS NOT A SWALLOW OR ICE PIGEON IN THOSE FEW GENERATIONS.. A REAL PROBLEM IN TODAYS ROLLER WORLD..))And let the cream naturally rise to the top and NOT breed from paper. (( I AGREE 100%)) Thanks, Clay Hoyle, TS Now if you have good enough birds (highly unlikely for a newbie) and the skill of an expert (Also highly unlikely for a newbie), by all means use the Mee method, just keep in the back of your mind that there are other methods.(( YEA, THERE ARE OTHER WAYS, BUT NONE OF THEM CLOSE TO FINDING THE BEST BIRMINGHAM ROLLERS AND BUILDING A TIGHT FAMILY AROUND THEM!!!)) Kenny, kindly list all the relevant things to look for in breeding rollers, that you take into account during a breeding year. And, just in case it looks like it, I ain't trying to be a smart ass, just looking for valuable information that you have available inside your head that could save me or especially someone new that may be reading this some years. (( CLAY, I CAN'T TEACH YOU ANYTHING, I'M ALWAYS READING YOUR STUFF TRYING TO FIND THEM FEW PEARLS OF WISDOM.. THE THINGS I LOOK FOR IN BREEDERS THAT MATTER, I THINK OFTEN I CAN'T PUT IN WORDS.. I CAN TALK ABOUT VELOCITY AND STYLE AND GOING ON BREAKS AND FREQUENCY AND FLY PATTERN AND ALL THE THINGS YOU HAVE HEARD A 100 TIMES.. MEANS NOTHING REALLY, WE ALL EVALUATE OUR BIRDS FOR POTENTIAL STOCK BY SOME OF THE SAME ARIEAL QUALITIES. I THINK ITS THE UNEXPLAINABLE STOCK SENSE WE WANT SOME ONE TO BE ABLE TO TELL US.. I CAN'T DO IT..I HAD A COCK BIRD LAND AFTER PUTTING ON A NICE SHOW THE OTHER DAY.. I WAS STANDING NEXT TO THE LOFT AND HE WAS ON THE ROOF COCKING HIS HEAD AND LOOKING DOWN AT ME.. HE HAD THIS EXPRESSION AND LOOK, LIKE HE WAS TRYING TO FIGURE ME OUT.. SOMETHING ABOUT THE WAY THIS BIRD APPEARS, SOMETHING ABOUT HIS PRESSANCE SAYS HE WOULD MAKE A GOOD ONE IN THE STOCK LOFT FOR ME.. YEA, HE IS A GOOD ROLLER, BUT SO ARE MANY OTHERS.. I WILL BREED FROM THIS COCK WHY? I JUST SHOWED YOU, I CAN'T EXPLAIN WHY.. LOL Sorry for the long winded ramble Clay,, Mongrel Lofts
