Fly every day. Getting sick and tired of super gluing these poor bastards back together again after the falcon attacks though. Should be better soon I hope.

I fly pretty much every day...weather permitting. If I get a hawk attack...which is rare for the amount of days that I fly..I will lock them down for a couple of days.

i fly mine every other day. put hawks are aiming for mine instead of those street pigeon who sits on top of the nieghbor's house all day. hawks would chase mine from the roof to the sky. the hawks was chasing mine for 1 hour the other day trying to catch my bird but i'm glad they did not get none. i like to see my rollers fly and spin because they look lame if they just sit in thier cages doing nothing.

At least one kit everyday. I shutdown only in winds of more than 15 mph or gusts of more than 20 and heavy rains

I loose few, very few to hawks but I am often harrassed.

I fly from April 1 to Oct 30 here in NJ. If I fly from Nov to end of March I would not have any thing left. Very bad falcon and hawks around here, on each kit door open will lose min. of 1 bird between Nov-Mar.

I fly daily from May through October. Like Sid, I live in New Jersey and flying any other time guarantees a hawk attack. November through April I fly my culls and stiffs once a week to test the waters. I'm considering getting another breed to fly in the "off season." I'm an addict to flying.

I fly, of course. Been able to fly all winter, though it has cost me a few birds. Hey, Newflyer, I see you are from Medina. I was raised in Canton and kept rollers there as a teen. I went to school at Kent State for one degree, and Ohio State for another. Can't say that I miss it though! Not those winters! LOL!Cliff

I am a firm believer of flying the birds. Why have performance birds if your not gonna to fly them? There are way more better birds for the show pen then the Birmingham Roller.
I all ways ask any newbie what his plans are... if it is for colorful birds, then I can direct him to a back yard feather merchant... if it is for performance, then I recomend him join a Roller Club and do the rounds until he finds something he likes.
Flier over here. Altho I would like to put in more time into them. Maybe then, they'll show me their full protential. At the moment, I am flying my old birds about twice a week and my young birds about 4 plus times a week. It really makes a difference... you have to put in the time.

I fly my birds daily, weather permitting, down here in Georgia. I am flying one kit of young birds now after being out of the hobby for several years for various reasons. Have some breeders together and some fosters to speed things along, and plan on flying three to four kits when I get the birds to do so. I am really enjoying the Forum. There are a lot of interesting topics and discussion. There are a lot of years of experience on this Forum. It is a lot different now than when I was in the hobby. Communications make a world of difference. Before you hardly ever talked to other fanciers. It is great now!!!

Bluesman, do you fly all your kits everyday or do you alternate the days. Do you have free-standing kit boxes or are they a part of a larger loft?

George,

What would be the sense in raising a performance pigeon, like the Birmingham Roller, and not flying it? These birds need to be flown, that is what they are bred for. To breed these birds without proving them out in the air, is a disservice to the breed, and a disservice to anyone that you might sell or give your birds to. Even if your breeders threw the percentages of good birds that top flyers throw, if you breed the off-spring without flying them, then chances are that you are breeding culls. Fly your rollers or switch to a non-flying show breed.

Dave the reason I asked is becuase I asked on another post who was flying in the 2006 World Cup and only a handful of
of people said they would be flyin and I was just wondering if some of the fanciers that have rollers even fly thier birds.

thanks george

David,

That is an old list, PA has become it's own WC region. Terry Duez was your RD, but since he has passed, you guys need to enlist a new RD for your area. Contact Ron Duncan about not having RD, and see if you can get someone to do it. Ron has you guys scheduled for the WC Finals, so you just need to organzie your regional fly and get a judge to come out to judge you guys. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

How far do you live from Elric and Scotty Rice? I'm hoping to go down and visit those guys this year some time and if you are close enough, it would be great to meet you also.

I got into rollers as a way of relaxation. I love to watch them roll. It is awesome - gift from God for the busy man like myself. I fly them as often as I can but do put them up in the winter as the hawks would take one every other day if left out to fly. I even had some Cooper's Hawks come right through the traps and into the loft a couple of years ago. I fly all my pigeon breeds, even the ones I breed for color.

I fly mine as much as possible. Suffered a hawk attack today and it bummed me out good! The Coopers hawk caught a young roller from behind, he never knew it was coming... That was the third bird I know of that I've lost to the Coopers. I'll let them rest for a few days and try again....

David, Last thing I heard is that Elric Jenkins has volunteered to step in to help you guys out and I think is now your RD for the NBRC and for the WC. Have you gotten in touch with him yet? He should be your go to guy.
