Yes. It happened to me only recently. Once the pair recognised there wasn't going to be another after the first egg, they stopped squatting over it and started sitting.

My first pair to lay eggs this breeding season only laid one egg. It hatched earlier this week without any problems and is doing very well. It took a day and a half to hatch and doesn't have to compete for food so it will be interesting to me to see how this bird turns out.

a friend of mine always takes the second egg away and just leaves the one so as the single chick gets all the food.
it seems to work for him coz hese got some cracking birds he says breed for quality not quantity think i mite try it this year coz ive got some lazy S.O.B.S

I've heard that one before - especially with racing pigeon fanciers. But, if you toss one perfectly good egg away from a good pair of birds, wouldn't you be thinking what might have been? You could be depriving yourself of a really good bird. It's a bit risky also - you would kick yourself if the remaining egg was broken in the nest or didn't hatch.

On their first rounds this year I had two hens who only laid one egg. The '03 hen only laid one egg in each of her last two rounds last year. The other hen (a niece of the '03 hen) also laid only one egg. They are on their second rounds now and each laid two eggs. If I did the one egg thing on purpose, I would be concerned that I might have thrown away the better prospect.

Hey Jord, it is possible and not that unusual. Just be sure to include a plastic or wooden egg. Seems that second "egg" triggers the pair to sit on the eggs and not just hover over the one and "waiting" for the 2nd to show up.

good point cant afford to go chucking away good birds the hawks have enough of them although ive saved 3 of them from the hawk latly with my great grandads method it involves a metal bin lid a stick and basicly make as much noise as possible it can be fun.
