Hi Ladies and Gents...
I am curious and wanted a little feedback about what age (roughly) a decent roller gets to be , before it will start to spin. And do all young birds ride the tail before they actually start to roll? I appreciate any and all input on this subject.
Ive never flown competitively , but have enjoyed raising rollers for about 30 yrs.My goal this yr is just to build my stock back up , as last fall i thinned out and went overboard...never again...i miss the masses, but also realise we cannot keep everything.I guess my birds are average , to me anyways ..getting about 15 to 20 feet out of them. Will they ever throw young the odd time that will just amaze me ? or will they always just produce birds of their talents ?
Thanks ahead of time for your time spent answering my questions.

Hey Greg, glad you are enjoying the site! Come back and post early and often! lol

There is not a rule for all rollers to roll by a certain age. I have 1 leg of my family that can take 8 months and longer to fully develop, my primary line will start the roll in about 4 to 5 months.

Because of preds, some guys only want a family of birds that come in early as they may not have the birds around long enough to develop the roll.

Early developing birds can present problems as some young birds cannot handle the roll as they are not yet mature enough and become lawn darts.

Gregg,
My birds go thru three stages. The first is the learning stage, when they actually begin to roll. Sometimes good,sometimes bad,sometimes both.

Then the moult happens.The kit goes stiff and you can`t fly as actively as you were. You want to cull them all and start again. Then they slowly start to kit and roll again and you notice a couple of your birds are not kitting and pretty much ingnoring the kit and flipping frequently. You will think there is something wrong with this bird, then he will drop a 30 smooth as glass.

This is when most birds will really show what they are capable of. They are in the adult plumage and mature enough to be an asset to the kit. This takes a month or three to sort thru all of the changes from this point on.

This is why it is important to give any bird you might have flying a long look, like 8-10 months. Not all squeaks are good from the start. You have to cull the obvious ones that are generally non co-operative. Then fly the rest and cull next spring.

Thaks Tony and Kenny;
I certainly appreciate any and all info i can get on the subject. Ive had rollers 4 ever , but haven't really talked to alot of educated breeders. Most of the people ive come across are flea market folks, and they will tell you anything to sell a bird, although ive met a couple ive liked , they are few and far between.
Thanks again.

I want mine to come in at 5-6 month plus at this age they have the mental and physical maturaty to handle it.
But I won't wait much past 9-10 mo for it,usually if my birds aren't showing promise at 10 mo. or before it isn't happening.
Birds that come in prior to this (5-6) are a headach has been my experiance and I get some of these also.
