I noticed tonight that two of my squabs have two or three small barbs growing out of the top of their middle toes. They almost look like small toe nails or something. Is this a deformity? Has anyone else ever seen this on their birds? If so, what is it and do they eventually fall off?

As long as a horn doesn't start growing out of thier forheads they'll be fine.

Good grief. They're just little feather plumes. These birds also probably have grouse legs. Nothing to worry about. Get Levi's book, "The Pigeon." It will answer nearly all your questions.

I'll see if I can't take a picture and post it tomorrow but I swear they are toenails, not feathers. They are pointy, hard, and shaped just like a toe nail.

I took a bunch of pictures but they all came out to fuzzy. I can't get the camera to focus in close enough but I'm telling you, they are toe nails and the squeaker that's got the most of them and they are the most prominent also has webbed feet, the outside toe webbed to the middle toe. I think I'm raising aliens.
