Hey Everyone...Once the cold weather has passed, this more so for those who experience cold snowy winters, where you have to add corn to the mix to keep the birds warm, what kind of seed mixture do you feed your rollers during the non_cold threatened months?

I am in northeast (NJ) and do not feed corn at all. My breeders during breeding season get 15% pellets and kit birds get wheat/milo/peas mixture. In winter I feed wheat/milo/peas or what ever available to breeders but little extra. One thing we can do is to make sure loft is facing south specially during winter time, this make birds happy as they do not get hit by cold northern winds.

siddiqir...Thanks for your input on the feed issue. I will have to see what my feed store has to offer. Thankfully they are a good supplier of a wide range of feed mixes. My coop faces as south as it possible could, and has a tight row of cedars at the north side of the loft , as well as a 8 foot privacy fence, so it definately has a great wind break. I also have two doors on the front , the outer door, solid , and the inside door is 100% screen, so on those days through the winter where the temps climb above freezing , i am able to leave the solid door hooked open so the birds can lay in the sun. Vibey, are you from Canada? we also get very rough winter here in NJ. As long as birds get good feed and clean water they able to survive just fine.

Vibey, I add a bit of popcorn when its cold. As it warms up I still feed wild bird seed. I add some pellets to bump up the protein. The breeders like the small seeds, flyers don`t care. When I get the squeaks over into the training pen I get em on 50 /50 seed/pellets. Get em growing and flying. I switch the flyers to 50/50 wheat /milo when I am training for a fly.Use pellets to adjust the fly time and altitude. Pretty simple. YITS KennyH

I live in around the Cleveland area and it is cold and snowy in the winter. I feed 10-15% corn in the winter. Corn is the first grain that is consumed. In summer for the kit birds is Wheat/Milo and occassional peas or pellet. For breeders, mix of Wheat, Milo, Peas, pellet and Saflower. This mix seams to work best and avoid wet and smelly droppings. But remember that feed is a tool and continually you have to change it a bit to suit the time and the performance desired. You will find yourself always learning new ways to feed them.
