I'm in Ontario Canada , where we get a fair amount of snow through the winter mths. I find that when the snow is gone, and there is no threat of any more snow falling in your area, this is a good sign spring has arrived. At this point , hawks move from in the city limits back to the forests etc to set up nests for breeding and raising young. When the snow covers the ground , it gives the rodents like mice etc ground cover , so hawks tend to come into the cities to feed as there's always lots of small birds , and yes , pigeons to eat. My hawk season is pretty accurate , and i lock down from late november, depending on first snow fall, until a week or so into April. Fly something out that you aren't gonna be freaked out if ya lose it..if for a couple days it doesn't get hasstled , you may be safe to fly all your birds. Happy Breeding and flying Vibey

My lockdown season is pretty much the same as Vibey. 1st week of Nov. to Last week of March. After that I am pretty much OK but not 100%...some time they hang around lot longer.
Where you located washington86? Some one from your region can better help you with that. Since these birds are migratory it makes difference from region to region

Cooper, Sharp-shinned, Goshawk and falcon will take your birds. They are very compact in size and fly as fast as 200 mph to catch the birds. All other kind of hawks are too slow to catch the pigeons I believe.

Mike...Sounds like maybe the soaring broadwinged hawk might be a redtail, but i could be wrong. Ive also heard that redtails aren't as great a threat as coopers hawks are. The coopers around here i never see soaring around , they hide in the trees , waiting to ambush anything that moves. The things we do for birds huh ??lol

Bushnell makes great binoculars , ive had a couple pair and they work nicely , but you'll have to explain to the dealer the heights at which you want to see clearly , so they can recommend the strenth that will best suit you .

If you need binocs to see your rollers, you might want to consider feeding them a little less....LOL.
I have a set of Bushnells I use when I want to identify a particular bird in the kit. Brian.

Fr Mike I like 7x35 binocs. 10x50 are to much. The hawk you seen more than likely was a redtail. I like binocs for checking out the hawks and other birds. The 7x35 will give a good view at closer range than 10x50. Tapp ---------- Tapp
