This is unusual to me from my experience so far.

I lost a cockbird that was on a nest with a 14 day pair of squeaks. The hen wasn`t taking care of them like I thought she should. I didn`t want to lose either one of the chicks. I took one chick and a deep breath, pulled a hen from another nest, then placed the chick in the nest with a single chick.

This pair had only one chick almost from the start. I knew it was a long shot but I felt like I had no choice. She walked over to the nest and sat the other chick like he had been there the whole two weeks.

In relation to nurturing this pair is the best I have ever seen. Fed 5 chicks on the floor last round.Great parents. All three chicks are doing well.

On an unrelated note:
Has anyone given thought to the mixture of cocks/hens in the box? I thought the other day about the propensity of one cock to unseat the other when a mating mount is attempted in thier presence. Seems to me this could be a factor in the mating in the box problem we sometimes encounter this time of year. I have almost a 50 50 mix this season and so far no nests or eggs. I do hear some calling from time to time. Consequently also some wingslapping.

Gald you found parents for your baby. Anyone is game for fostering in my loft. I have fostered chicken, ducks, doves and quails. My pigeons are great little incubators.
