It is a migrating hawk. As I don't have much hawk problem. I would usually only lose 5-10 birds max to the hawks/falcon in a year.
I think it is trailing the Geese and ducks as they have just moved into the area. There are huge flocks landing daily across the street where a open corn field lies.
About red tails being protective. I have heard of such but can not confirm the theory. I have tons of Red Tails in the area. Some times I will see up to 5 different Red Tails in a 30 minute span during mid day surfing the air currents. I also will see a ton of Turkey Votures in any given day. Then there are the occassional Osprey fly over. I think all these other Hawks and Votures rule the area so I'm sitting pretty. The only time I would see losses of any magnitude is when they are migrating thru.
These are sneaky buggers. It's time to shut down the flying program until clearer skies.
Give chase is a advice I will give any one who does not want to lose a caught bird. I once believed that it is a sealed deal once the hawk diggs it's talons in (the death grip) but it seems like most birds will just play dead. I was surprise to see how little of a injury our birds will sustain from such attacks. My old bird had two holes in it, one on the rump and the other by it's keel. Bloodly but not bad. My young bird trapped in with one sprung leg and a bloodly wing tip. Both birds were saved after being caught and taken down to finish off.

Don't know about redtails chasing off coopers. last summer I was watching a redtail that was setting on a power pole and a coopers came and landed on the wire abot 10 ft from redtail. Mabe the redtail was full and lazy!I got redtail that nest within 800 or so yds. from me and in the fall I get coopers aroud and I personaly never seen them chase them. just what I have observed. I'm sure a redtail would catch and kill one if he wanted to. Remember the hawks' pigeons' tigers' lions' sheep and rabbits' all live in peace and harmony.Yea Right! Tapp

the redtails were very protective of the nest site. I think they regarded the Coopers as a threat to their young. If they are not nesting, they could care less about other hawks; although, I have seen them steal pigeons that the Coopers have caught. Lord forbid that they should ever decide to work together.
