I heard recentlty that pellets and milo were a good fly mix for the strain I'm working with.Has anybody had some sucess with this combo?I think the pellets were the green Purina type....Aloha,Todd

Alohazona, I had never given mix (pellets & grain) to kit birds but I should try out. My breeders only get pellets (too much waste with grains).

I have fed kit birds pellets only but it does not seem to work for me. The pellets get digested very quickly. I feed once a day and they seem to be real hungry would not matter even they get as much as they want. Fly time is also effected. Grains seem to work for me with girt once a month. I feed mix peas/milo/wheat and birds seem to pick their favorite grains. Some go for peas, some for milo...I know they do not like pellets they prefer grains. For good static I believe pellets and each grain should given separately and watch the kit for results. It is really time consuming to feed grain separately.

Ivan,
I feed both. Some times I use straight pellets and sometimes straight seed. I usually feed 3/4 milo 3/4 wheat and 1/2 pellets. I try to keep the protien up around 14 .I think it works pretty well. Sometimes I feed WBS and cut it with pellets. I really like they way they fly on the WBS but they will fly long if I leave em on it for too long. Going with 3/4 pellets and 1/4 milo right now gotta bring em back up.

My birds fly so much better when I do a pellet mix with wheat and milo. I use regular pigeon mix by Winners Cup during the Winter. During the fly season I use a pellet mix. I use 28% pellet with wheat and milo. I mix five parts 50/50 wheat and milo to one part pellet. If they start getting a little light I bump it up to 1.5 parts pellet. I rotate the pellet mix with straight wheat and milo mix. For example I will fly my A team and then give 2cups pellet mix to 20 birs. The next day rest 1.5 cups pellet mix. Again Rest and then 1 cup wheat and milo. If it is getting warmer I may use the straight wheat and milo mix on the first reast day instead of pellet mix. They usually come out looking pretty good. There are times when I put them on straight wheat and milo for about a week, then I give them the mix again...sometimes they respond pretty well to a shot of protein. Then back to the original feed method. I think the pellets work better because it seems to digest faster...and the birds are ready to fly and eat after the rest and and 24hrs from feeding..because the digestion process is totally over. I think and its just an hypothisis....that the harder grains are still being digestsed a little in 24 hours. When people ask about my feed methods...I just tell them to try it for a month or so...if it is good then stick to it...It may really wake your birds up...But it may make them fly to fast. Who knows unless you try. I have tryed both and it took me a long time to come up with the perfect ratio of Pellets to wheat/milo. So....Yes I do use a pellet mix that I mix myself. Yes I get better performance out of my bird with the pellets.

Young birds get mostly a straing pellet mix everyday...until they really start coming into the roll. Then I will tweak the feed slowly. I really tweak the feed when I know they have a good handle on the roll. They also get more rest beween flying as they get older and better with the roll as a whole.

As for switching between wheat milo and protein mix...I just pay close attention to the birds. The bird character and performance will tell me when they need rest or a feed tweek. A lot of the time it is just a gut feeling too.

Good post Paul. I am going to try your method. Right now I am feeding two parts milo, two parts wheat, and one part peas. This is ok, but I want to try your way just to see. I keep the pellets here for my breeders so I have it on hand already. Thanks for your advice. I'll let you know how it works for me.

I agree with Marion,Good post Paul. You answered the question I was having with the digestion thing. My CONTINENTALS tend to fly High and long,I love the roll, but if their a fly mode when they leave the box of course its not what I am looking for.I do not like to starve them down for roll, but on the other hand they do need the protein for it.When I give to much peas more often then not it can go the other way, mixed with the weather.I'll be experimenting with the pellet mix you posted,Thanks again for your insight....Aloha,Todd

Todd,
WBS is wild bird seed. I use the penkote from walmart.$5.63 a #25 bag. It has milo, wheat, black sunflower, and pro something millet. There is a vitamin coating that is pretty nutritious. Protien runs about ten the fat is a bit high but MY birds still like it and perform pretty well on it. I have found the feeds I use if properly selected only require grit very occasionally. The pellet bag says don`t give em grit period with this product. The WBS had iodide and calcium carbonate in it,the active ingredients in grit.
When I do grit em I just give em a shot of the Hartz sand grit. I have not given my birds any grit period in 6 months and they are fine. Try it once, run one bag thru a select few and see if they don`t fly pretty well on it.

sid,

I feed the feed in a mix. I will mix it in a Big Coffee can and then use my wifes measuring cup to feed the birds. I have three weather proof bins that hold a 50pound sack. I have on for Pellets one for Wheat and one for milo. I just take the scooper and mix my 50/50 wheat and milo in one coffee can. Then I take three scoops from the W/M can and put it in the other can...then I had one scoop of pellets and then two more scoops of W/M. As for scoop size I just found a scooper that will pretty much fill my coffe can about 3/4 full with my mix. Then I shake it all up and mix it. If I am adding the extra half scoop of pellets for whatever reason...I do what I just explained and add the half scoop last..and then mix.

Closer to a competition...I will feed each grain seperatly so I know that they are all getting what they need...I do not know why I do it..I really have not noticed a difference in performance.

My breeder mix..is 1 part pellet, 1 part wheat, 1 part milo and every 2 times that I do my parts I will add one part sauflower. I use a coffe can for each part and mix the feed in a 25 gallon garbage can. That way they still get the benefits of the pellest and the wheat and milo keeps the shit hard and not smelly. Nice healthy babies.

remember to try it for a month or more...so you know the birds are reacting to your mix only. Just remember during the summer months..you don't need to feed as much.

Thanks Paul, it sounds like some thing to try out. Pellets are more like supplement for peas however I guess pellets has a lot more e.g. salt, vitamins & different amino acids, etc...I bought bag of pellets and it has Primalac (probiotic) in there. Just start feeding to breeders I will see how youngsters will come out
