Has anyone tried flagging down rollers instead of using a whistle?
Which do you think is better?
What are some techiques on flaggin and some on whistles?

MrJX, I use the feed can. I use the plastic instant coffee kind with the lid. The birds could be 400 feet up, but once I start shaking it in a waving kind of motion, within 5 min they will be on top of the kit box. It is very impressing to see the birds listen to your call. But when a hawk is in the area, they don't listen and stay up until clear for them to come down.

I tried to use those whisle thing but man I felt very stupid doing it around the neighbors. It was kind of silly to me. Hope this help.

Mr JX I would whistle to them when you feed them. Do this even when feeding the breeders while there in the nest, whistle to them' shake the feed can. Let them learn that this means time to chow down. This will help with getting them to trap. Use a white rag on a pole to keep them up after they have learned to fly and are comming in to land just for the heck of it,Be carful not to flag them when they've only been on kitbox roof for only a few days. let them git used to flying and landing. As far as flagging them to come down I have never heard of. It would make them not want to land in my book. but you can probably train them to most anything with repetition!

I feel alkward telling this, but...

I duct taped 2 small metal cans together after placeing metal washers inside them to make my call for the birds.

Last summer was the first and last time I used this approach because, when I shook the can trying to call the birds down... the neighbors a few houses over, whom having a backyard party at the time with a very large group of children all began running into the street while pulling their parents along.... the reason? They thought it was the ice cream truck.
Here I am like an idiot standing in my yard shaking this loud rattle while looking up into the sky, and all of these kids with their parents, looking over the tall wooden fence at me thinking this old man must have lost his mind.

Now I just toot the whistle a couple of times and run and hide.

Do you think that using a small red bandana attached to the feed tray would work better? Everytime you feed them they would see it and associate the red bandana with food. After a couple of times all you have to do is let them see the bandana and they would come down. Sometimes I think that they are too far up to hear the whistle, but i am pretty sure they will see the bright red bandana.
