The Snow Blind Hen! 3059- 02. 30' performer. 1st, generation cross top side David Sanchez / English imports of 1980's Bottom side Don Ouellett. My question is that the tort's and grizzles gene will take over my loft? Right now this breeding year im using 5 of my birds that are of this colors, one pair are light tortoishells all others are mated to hard colors. Red check, blue check, blue bar self. I check all there offspring babys 1st rounders, that are 3 weeks old and 8 are grizzle / tort's and 2 are hard color, dark bronze, blue check self, i whould like to know if anyone else has the same concened with this gene factor spreading through there loft.

Is it the color that bother you? In my loft. I see alot red checks, grizzle, Harder to find blue and black. But that was my choice.

Rust, White will take over if you let it. Remember, the birds you breed out of a grz/trt will have the color in its background even if it isn`t showing. White has a tendency to be hot and loose. Feather quality USUALLY isn`t the greatest but if it works.... Usually mated to a blue bar or red check will give 50/50 with a grz/trt or a wf/t bar or check. Then mate the check back to keep the white down. I introduced grz to increase the frequency. I pulled all but one griz from the breeders this season after I had 18 griz squeaks out of 3 breeders. They will take over quick. YITS v99

Richard, you will from every heterozygous grizzle x non-grizzle mating, produce 50 percent of each. You might get six in the first three rounds, or you might get none. But over time and with enough raised, your percentages should be around 50 percent. I currently have 6 grizzles I am breeding from, yet of the over 60 total babies I have banded, only four grizzles in the kit boxes. One of the pairs hasn't thrown any grizzles at all. Eventually they will. I have some birds that Bob Westfall bred. The pedigrees on the birds show that Bob is very hard core about always mating a grizzle to a non-grizzle. Every mating for five generations back on all of the pedigrees show grizzle x non grizzle matings. But only three of the six birds I got of his were grizzle, the others were selfs. If grizzle ends up loosening up your birds and you like the frequency that can, in some lofts, accompany grizzle, then just make sure to keep some of the non grizzle offspring that are just about as good. Balance the matings in your mind with the grizzle combination being second. Brian.

re: The Snow Blind Hen
A very well bred specimen from what I can read and see.
I can definitely use one of those those Snow-blinders in the breeding pen here @ Deep Spin Lofts.
