My daughter and I have a small number of several breeds, food is expensive. How do you purchase food to keep 100 birds? We use about 50 lbs a month Looking for ideas to keep more birds and reduce the food costs. thanks

what do you pay for the 50lb? Usually wheat is about $4.50 and good pigeon mix with corn is $7.00. I don't think that is expensive.

Hit your local Walmart and check out a big bag of wild bird seed. 50 is about 10 bux. No corn in it. Go to the snack section and buy some bags of great value popcorn and mix as you like. yits v99

I buy it from a local feed/pet supply store. Some places sell the wheat for $9.00 while the cheapest I found is $4.50. Same for the pigeon mix, the Nutrina brand I used to get from the Tracktor Supply chains is for around $20.00. But I found mix as good, where they mix it for you for the $7.00. I add saflower to the mix myself. By the way, the 50lb Saflower is for $23.00. The Milo is for $10.00. I live in NE Ohio. BTW, the wheat is Ohio grown yellow wheat and it is not the Canadian hard wheat.

Prices vary from state to state. Here in NJ, 50 lbs bag of wheat cost 10 dollars (good quality wheat). Milo cost the same. Peas are bit expensive. 50 lbs bag of peas would cost 15 dollars. 50 lbs of pellets cost roughly $13.50. I used few different brands of pellets and they all cost the same.
I would also like to hear if any one has good suggestion >keep more birds and reduce the food costs< although 50lbs - 10 dollars a month is not bad deal at all.
Wal-Mart/Bjs/Kmart also sell wild birds seeds. They are cheaper. I think 50 lbs bag of wild birds mix cost less then 6 dollars which is also another way of buy the food cheaper. I have not try wild birds mix on rollers but may be I should try and see what they do on wild birds mix.
Thanks, -Rauf

upcd Have you had any canker problems? Reason I ask is there is a correlation between cracked corn and canker. It is assumed that the fungus enters thru the cracks in the corn. Scratch contains cracked corn, thats why I feed the WBS, no corn I add my own. mtc v99
