Hello,
I have someone in Sherbrooke Canada that wants to swap some birds with me. However, I live in Massachusetts. I have never dealt with birds out of th U.S. Can someone let me know if this is possible? Can someone ship from Canada to the U.S.? If not, if i were to drive to Canada, could i bring birds across the border?
Thanks,
Sidney

We bought an Australian Terrier from Tacoma,Washington a couple of years ago and the breeder brought her across on the ferry and I think we just paid a bit of import duty and that was it!Can't see why it would be different for birds cause there is no H5N1 on this continent yet.Don't say anything unless the customs guy asks, then say they are your pets.Shouldn't have to pay duty, they are coming back with you.

The process is pretty straight forward, if you are to follow the laws that be (IF).
Americans sending birds to Canada must have the State vet sign the papers provided from your local vet. At the border when coming across the individual must have these papers plus a bill of sale. You will pay duty.
Canadains sending to US, some deal but its the Federal Vet that signs the papers your local vet provides.
Both ways there is some money involved to get the papers signed and made out by the vets (money grab)
I lucked out and only payed $20 were some others were being charged $100.
Another option is have one of the individuals go to a show in the other country and take down 10 birds using the proper papers and switch the birds and return with the new birds. People are very rarely check on the way home for the band numbers. I'm not saying this is what you should do but what I have heard of being done.
