Just wondering what predators people have had to deal with over the years.
Please list the names of the predators and the area and country you live in.
For example I am in the upper part of
Central Ontario Canada.
I have had to deal with
Cats
Weasels both the two and four legged kind.
Raccoons
the odd hawk but we don't have a wide variety of them where I live so it isn't a major issue any time of the year. So I don't do a whole lot of locking down.
I must say out of all ofthese the one that most annoys me is the two legged weasel who disguises himself as a friend then just about empties your loft.
I am lookiing forward to hearing what ails you.

No two legged weasels here, thank God! (live in the the country, southerntier of Western N.Y.) Hell people around here don't even know what a roller is. Sometimes you feel like a ass trying to explain what this bird does.Back to the question Doug. Coopers, Sharp-shinned, once in awhile a Gosh, Redtailed look but never bother. Raccoons during the summer, stray cat will wander in maybe once a year.(shitheads drop off unwanted goods in the country!) This I can deal with. If I caught one of those two legged weasels I'd probable end up in prison! That's why I live in the country. yits, Doug

Hi CJ;
I am in southern ontario, and around here i deal with coopers hawks , but mostly from november to april, then things seem safe for the most part, through the summer. Ive had raccoon probs , but was my fault , did not close the solid door on the trap, lost 13 birds that eve.
I have the odd cat , but having a small dog , the cats aren't a big issue. I try to stay out in the yard while the birds are flying to make sure all is well.I don't even lock my coop, touch wood , but i guess if i lost them to a two legged weasel, i may be forced to actually get some good birds...lol. Happy breeding bro.

The only predator I have is the occasional cat. The dog normally does a pretty good job of keeping them away.
Wind is my biggest enemy. It`ll gust up to 40 from a 10 mile an hour breeze. Then poof bye bye squeakers.

In my area we have all that you guys already mentioned plus mink-you can usually tell a mink has hit you by a bite to the head or neck of your bird and then they punch a hole in the ribcage and eat the heart -liver,just high protien, they will sometimes crack open the skull and eat the brains. If they are not particularly hungry they just go on a killing spree--just like a weasel.I have never had my rollers hit but I trapped for years and had enough calls from people mystified as to what was killing their chickens and ducks. many times they thought someone was shooting big holes in them.but I would point out that a bullet making that big of a hole would make an exit hole even bigger. My loft is inside a small pole barn one layer of welded wire 1x1-1/2 and another layer of half by half- . hopefully that keep them out.

What you described is what the coon does. It is the same exact thing. Anyway, I only have to worry about the coops. There is no two legged weasels around here and not even a coon. My neighbor next door has several cats but one of them is a hunter and very friendly at the same time. She harassed the birds’ couple of times, but a soft pellet gun done the trick. They moved since then and I have no problem with cats anymore.

Although, I have locks on my breeding lofts and the kit boxes, the locks are set high enough so the kids around won't open them when I am not around. It is their curiosity that concerns me but not steeling the birds. Kids will always be kids and I know that.

hi group,
here in northern Indiana, the only real predator problem is coopers. about once a year i get a coon that tries to hang around but sooner or later i spot it in a tree sleeping and lets just say a 30-30 will nock him clean into the next tree.lol. as for the coopers they are only bad from early fall till april. i didnt fly much this winter. finally learned my lesson... we do have a 2 legged problem, in the form of a neighbor lady that was stealing birds for her grand daughter to show in 4-H. she got a couple from a neighbor but he spotted them at the fair and she was forced to remove them from the show and return them to their rightful owner. the worst part of it was i had offered to give the girl birds if her grandmother would just bring her by a couple times so i could show them how to handle and care for the birds. luckily i do keep locks on my loft and kitboxs....enough wind from me for one sitting. by.......

Down here in Georgia hawks are the biggest problem from about November to about the first of April. Not much of a problem the other months. If you live close to the woods (forest) you might have a racoon or two visit. As far as my loft goes it is pretty much predator proof. Just have a problem with the hawks when I fly my birds. I am watching my birds the whole time they fly, especially when they first go up and when they are landing, and have a way to scare them off when I see them approaching. Lost a few earlier but none lately. Don't know of any minks this far south or weasels. Have never seen an owl bother the birds here.
