I am sure that this post probably has been discussed somewhere earlier. However, there are to many topics for me to go back and search. Therefore, i need to find out this question. I live in the North East and it has been fairly cool this spring. I started breeding in early March. I am currently breeding 10 pairs. Most of the first round only 1 egg was fertile from most pairs? However, i have a pair which both eggs were infertile on both the first and second rounds? Does anyone know why this would happen? This has never happened before. Both cock and hen are 04 birds? Thanks, anyone SJP

SJP, I live in N.J. and started breeding in Jan. When I start this early, the first egg frequently gets chilled unless I bring it into the house. I have a series of my wife's dishes set up with tissues, egg I.D., and egg sitting on top of the dresser in our bedroom. I do this through Feb. Removing the first egg as laid and replacing it with a wooden egg from Foy's. When the second egg is laid, I return the first egg to the nest. Since I started doing this, I generally get two eggs hatching in my early rounds. The pair running dry on two rounds may be another situation. Good luck, Geo.

Just because they didn't hatch doesn't mean they were infertile. There are many thing that can kill a young bird in the shell. Are you candling them once they have been sat on to see if the embrio has started developing? C.J.

The veteran breeders all ways tosses their first set of eggs away. This insures that their next round would be more unison. It also insures better fertility rate. If your problems continues, it maybe you have a disease amongst your stock. This can cause your birds not to lay fertile eggs or cause your cock birds to shoot off duds. Not a expert in the disease department but thought I'd pass what I have been told by others. I think the best bet is all ways to toss the first set of eggs. Heck, it only takes about 7-10 days before another round is laid. Thor

I have been around for a long time raising rollers and I personally do not throw the first set away. But then again my breeders don't set on my eggs. I strictly use fosters. A question that came to mind is there any chance this pair is on a med or eating medicated foods? C.J.
