I have a breeder cock who was making coughing sounds (sounding like a dog bark - a very tiny dog). I checked him out and he shows no sign of illness and I looked down his throat and I found nothing that he would be coughing up and the color looked good.
I have isolated him.
Any suggestions?

Nick, if it happens to a breeder, generally while feeding it is either respiratory stress (from feeding) or CRD (chronic respiratory disease). Some cock birds will cough if they are on later rounds that have went by really quick. Often just giving them some aureomycin and resting them gets them back into shape. CRD is not curable and wont go away and will be present all of the time when breeding or any stressful period. Brian.

Nick, I have had birds that had the same cough that you described. In most cases the cough went away in a few days with no medication. I believe it was a cock bird in every case. Anyway I have never known this to be contageous. I had a couple this year, and they are both fine now. Hope yours does the same.

Nick, I too had a cock bird that had this coughing , he lived about 4 years I don't believe the cough killed him,but i did lose him. Never figured out what it was, or found anything that cured the cough, was not contagous. I guess it was just a feather ball. LOL

The cough lasted about three days and stopped. Bird is doing fine. This cock bird feeds all of the young and has always done it, they don't have to be his..........the best parent I have ever had.
