Just wondering how many fanciers have their birds on a regular vaccination or medication regiment. If So when for what and how often do you medicate? Oh and what are you medicating for? C.J.

Vitamins and minerals added to drinking water daily and red grit. I give some apple cider vinegar(ACV) once a month. Don't do any other "medicating" unless one shows signs of illness and then posibly some diluted antibiotics depending on illness; isolation; and rest. Don't worm unless there is evidence of worms(have not had a worm problem for 3 to 4 years). Haven't had canker for 3 to 4 years. I have one bird with a cronic respitory problem that is not cureable and is induced when under breeding stress(feeding young). It is not contagous.
Rarely do I have a sick bird and have never had worms in my loft. Good clean, dry feed. Dry and clean loft or kit boxes.
I do not bring in birds from outside (I have my own breeders to keep my kit boxes full.)

I give absolutely nothing, except fresh food and water. If something happens, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. In England, we have to visit a vet to get a prescription for most of the meds you can easily get in the US, so for us it's a big deterrent from medicating unnecessarily.

I just give them good clean feed and fresh water daily. Red grit is a must. I will give them Apple cider Vin....at least once a week...I give electrolytes (pigeon gatorade) once or twice a week during the summer and once every couple of weeks during the Winter. They get a shot of red cell every now and then. I have never had canker in the last 5 years. I have only wormed a couple of times.....I only give a watered down med a week before a big fly..so that is twice a year...and that is only to the competition team. The breeders get no meds unless they show signs of a sickness...not sneeze....I mean reall f'ed up...not moving...skinny...feathers puffed up...eyes opening and closing slowley...other birds are picking on it or humping it...I will then remove the bird and medicate..it that does not work..it is culled ...plain and simple...I do not medicate the other birds unless they all show the same signs.
I do vaccinate for PMV one time a year. a vaccination is just that a vacine....not a medication. Just give them lots of vitamins and minerals and you should be fine. Fresh food and water.

Nick,
how do you know you have never had worms in your life? I have often wondered whether I should worm and did once, 5 years ago!

Ken,
I just have never seen the signs for worms in thier droppings and because I never see the evidence of a problem I don't medicate.

It doesn't hurt to deworm the birds. I do it once a year every year and if there is nothing in the dropping then it's done. But if worms come out in the dropping, I will repeat in 30 days and in 6 months. I only had worms when birds were shipped to me, other than that never while they are in my loft. We do have some humidity in the summer but not constant to cause worms. Paul, yours did not have any when arrived last year, and the majority are doing good this season.
