If anybody can help me with the yoyo effect of Monte Niebel. To explain how it works and how do you go about instilling this in your birds.

Riaan,
I use the yoyo technique for feeding my rollers. It gives me a lot more control over the birds. I used to have a problem with high flying, and stiff birds. Since they are always on the hungry side on fly day they have established the habit of flying at a good height. I will change what I am feeding depending on whether I am building them up or breaking them down for a major fly. Wheat is always the base.

Keith,

Thank you for your response. I was wondering if it will be possible for you to give me some direction on a training program for the Yo-yo effect.

It is a program that works well for "harder" familys , it also takes a while to figure it out and to get the birds into the groove of it.

I rest my birds two days in between flies so you can try this. On fly days feed mixed (wheat, milo, and peas). On the two rest days feed straight wheat. They get the same amount on all these days. I feed a condensed tomato soup can full. Another ways is on fly day one can of mix and 1/2 can of wheat, next day (1st rest day) 1 can of wheat, and on the second day of rest 1/2 can of wheat. Put them out the next day and hope they do their thing.

Riaan,
I copied this from a post on this forum last year (I think)…

"Monty started the YO-YO system of feeding.
1 cup of wheat per 20 birds 3rd day before a fly.
1/2 cup of wheat 2nd day before a fly.
1/4 cup of wheat the day before a fly.
At the last fly he flew he added a few Canadian peas of which Joe Roe was doing good on them.
He told me he let the birds have 1 drink of water at each feeding and pulled the water."

My birds require a little more feed or they will land early.
I feed 1 1/2 to 2 soup cans after the birds fly.
1 soup can on 1st rest day
1/3 to 1/2 soup can on 2nd rest day.

I will use my mix on the day the birds fly for most of the year. I switch to straight wheat a couple of weeks before a big fly then on the last fly before the big fly I will give them:
1/2 can Peas and 1 can wheat day of fly
1 can wheat first day of rest
1/2 can wheat second day of rest.

I am still dialing in this system. For the World Cup this year I started the straight wheat 3 weeks before the fly. I had two birds come down at 14 minutes. This was not happening leading up to the fly. (I peaked them a week too early).

I feel the important thing about this system is that you over feed a little on the day they fly, and under feed the day before you fly. That way they are always hungry the day you feed, but you are not breaking down the birds too bad. It gives you more control over the birds and they tend to not fly as high.

I read someplace else that Monty had a lot of overflys before he switched to the YO-YO system.

Give it a try
Good luck

Keith,
I think that your feed quantities are a little bit on the starvation side. LOL

Day 1 3 cups (rested)
Day 2 1 1/4 cups (rested)
Day 3 1/2 cup (rested0
Day 4 Fly and start yo-yo over again.

At least that's the way I remember Monty's yo-yo system for old birds. Also, this is for a 20 bird kit and the quantities are only a guideline for you to adjust on your own.

HI EVERYONE THANKS FOR THE HELP. I WAS TRYING IT AND JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE I WAS DOING IT RIGHT. I FLEW THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS MORNING AFTER THE 3 DAYS. THEY STILL FLEW FOR 42 MINS THIS MORNING. SO I WORMED THEM. ITS AN OLD BIRD KIT I EVEN HAVE 2002 BIRDS IN THE KIT.
