Okay, for those who combined families, what was lacking in the family you started with? And if something was lacking, why did you stay with it? If you brought in a bird with the trait you needed, did mixing this bird remove some or all the other traits that were already present in your current family or did it work right every time?
How many seasons and how many birds did it take to establish the new trait you needed? At what point would you say your family is yours? ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

The family that i'm cultivating started by being fed up with the birds that i had from N.California. In 2001 very late into the roll. when the last time i talk to that breeder he said that some time his family skips a generation on performance, man if he had explain that to me at first i whould'nt have spend all that hard earn BIG money on those birds. So i made a promise to my self that i'll start over by cultivating my own Rollers by out crossing, from roller men that i'v met by friendship and the ones that have my respect the first years were hard lot of culls, to hot, ect.Iv'e made great progress from 2002, 03,04,05,2006 is looking the best QUALITY so far in 11 years in the hobby. The performace 'spin' is tighter in the roll. And there way smaller in body size.

Many of the time's when I see people outcrossing they are down breeding something better trying to make thier mediocre or problem birds better. I have seen this over and over again , my thought is if something better was found wouldn't it better better to scrap the rest and go with the better bred family ? To many get stuck on what isn't working and then downbreed better birds trying to make it better.

Hy Cody--Making your own family,is takeing birds from two or more different sources(Different flyers)Like getting birds from someone in calif. and other birds from new york.the birds may or may not have similar backgrounds.you then start breeding and culling-somemore breeding and culling until you have some uniformity of type(body shape, feather quality--that is tight feathers etc.)and roll ,depth of roll, velocity, good kitting etc.when you have done all that(I am guessing a number of years) then I believe you have your own family of birds. Some wiser than I have also stated that even If you get one family and keep it that way(no other birds brought in)after a few years they become your family because of your particular breeding, feeding, flying choices-for the good or the bad.SO guys how did I do explaining this to Cody? Being a new guy myself--have I learned anything? --or am I all wet ? Lol.

Starting your own family is not an easy task. You should select the very best families that you are able to, and maybe if you do, your problems might be minimal. I built my family many years back, and established a base family that brings me self satisfaction. My base family is a combination of different bloodlines, some known and some unknown. Because of the unknowns,I seem to have lost some friends along the way, for what ever sense that makes, but, the ultimate goal should be self satisfaction. If you achieve that in your stock of rollers, I feel that you have accomplished alot. If you are able to create a base family, you can not only fly them and be satisfied, but also use them for future experiments of which may even bring more joy!! The other option is to purchase those that have already been developed by someone else, but the same satisfaction would not be there. When alot of people fly the same bloodlines, the best trainer wins!! Richard. I am enjoying Richard Luna and his wife Cheryl. I look forward to getting together with you also.

MOTHERLODE, you are right if line you introduce is better than the one you have,DUMP IT!!!!! I believe when you are looking for another family to cross out you better do your homework first. You must or should know what quality is,velocity, style of the spin and most important is the percentage,(higher the better of course)of the family, now and past. You should strive for better always and never compromise,I have seen alot of this in my pigeon life. Then, will your family start to become of high calibre. After of couple generations the family should be yours, your the chef and your ingredients and your cooking, lets see how it taste. Thats my story and i'am sticking with it,lol.....................Hey.......RUST NEVER SLEEPS, yeah man come on down in june with d.sanchez r.espinoza,i'll throw down a b-que.I'll call you later........Richard Luna
