Is there a difference between milo and millet? Decided to start playing with the diet of last years leftover stiffs. I was flying them on a diet of 14% protein no corn. Getting 45 min. to 1 hr. of flying time and a lot of action without much depth. Went to the feed mill and bought some wheat-they had no milo so I bought white millet. (Are they the same thing?) Put the birds on a mix of 2 parts wheat, 1 part millet, and 1 part 14% mix. Flew them last night, and they came out like homers. Buzzed the sky for 45 min. (kitting like glue) then loosenedup, slowed down, and started rolling-very sloppy. Came in after 15 min. of this behavior. Upon coming in the best bird to date an '04 cock rolled down from about 25 ft. He's never done that before. Should I keep on feeding this mix, and what should I expect to happen. I'm not expecting miracles-feel that these birds are basically not good enough, but I'm playing with them for experience. They've been on this mixture for four days. Thks, Geo.

Millet isn`t really high in protien, but it is oily. Thats why your birds come out like gangbusters. In rollers there is no right and wrong, just what works and what doesn`t. Same old mantra, what works for your birds...... G/L v99

Geo, I would move a little slower on the change of feed. Unless you are in a hurry to clear perch space. Wheat is the staple for most roller guys, so try that for a while. I use a 14% no corn mix for my breeders, but for anything that flies I mix it (1 to 1) with wheat. I feed the flying mix as a maintenance diet, and I switch to straight wheat when prepping for a fly. Since you had a roll down I would try the (wheat/ mix) for a week or two and see what happens. Then try straight wheat for a week or two. Then if you are still not getting what you want try the milo. Yee, 14% refers to the protein level of the feed. Birds have leveled off and are back to flying normally. They have become more active, but there is no increase in the depth of the roll. May be that what I see is all they can give. (Not enough, and if they don't improve they'll be going.) Hawks have finally left, and I am starting to fly my young birds. One group of 23 is starting to kit and another groupo of 12 is ready to take to the air. Almost time for last years rejects to find a new home. Thanks for the input. Geo.
