I do not understand, When Fanciers say that, They cull there birds, Is that killing them? Why would you want to kill them? I think of it as this, If you love pigeons, or your birds you will never kill your own birds, Thats terrible. You know, Why could't the fanciers just give them away to other fanciers, if they do not like the way that they roll, Or Velocity or whatever, Let the pigeons go to the feral populations, But, PLEASE DO NOT KILL THE BIRDS.

Hello Igor,Many fanciers will “cull” birds by giving them away, selling others, etc. Also fanciers keep pigeons for different reasons, for those that “keep” or “collect” pigeons as pets, the idea of destroying an unwanted or unhealthy bird goes against their ethos.

A breeder of top quality stock often needs to take a different approach. His/her goal is to breed toward the breed ideal, when birds do not go in that direction, culling is an option; it is a matter of choice and necessity.

A fancier active with his breeding program may produce more youngsters than it is healthy to keep, barring having someone to give or sell them to; culling them in a humane fashion may me the only viable choice.

The worst thing a fancier can do to a domesticated pigeon is to allow it to mix with feral pigeons. Having been pampered his whole life by having plenty of healthy food and water, medications when needed, a safe loft from predators, a domesticated pigeon stands little chance of survival in the wild. It would be a slow tortuous death by starvation as it has not learned how to forage for food like the feral pigeons.

Culling animals has been a part of animal husbandry for thousands of years. The wise fancier knows to minimize the number of birds produced each year and provide for humane methods of culling when this option is chosen.

None,
If you are proud of your birds, then letting any non-ideal birds leave your care with it's head still screwed on is not even a remote possibility. Your birds carry your name.
The fore fathers of this hobby started it off by only spreading birds that met the ideal. They must of been doing something right as we are reaping the rewards.
Believe it or not, the people who are killing their culls love this hobby and their birds more then any one else. They feed their birds with the best of feed and keep the sharpest/cleanest of lofts. Giving quality birds away to help dedicated new fliers is a every day event for such fanciers.
Can you imagine if every one started selling or giving away their culls? In a matter of no time, the spread of junk bird would over run this hobby and ruin this wonderful breed. How many times would you hear a new fancier cry his birds don't do much or are roll downs. Would you think such fanciers would stay long with the breed if he had birds of such quality. This hobby is as such because guys do the opposite. They give and only sell quality birds. The hobby has grown and spread to every parts of the world because of this.
What is so wrong with only spreading quality birds? I believe it is a crime to spread culls.

I agree with Tony. In the world of livestock...it is not uncommon to cull an animal..if it does not meet the standard to better the breed. Is done to dogs, cats, horses, cow, goats and the list goes on and on. Most of us try to give the birds away as food, or give them to an individual that just likes pigeons or pretty colors. Look at the Race Horse world...when a race horse breaks its leg...well it is destroyed...why...the horse was raised to race...and it no longer meets the ideal...could the horse be saved..yes...but a lot of money, time and the risk that the horse will never walk again is factored in. But you can't say that horse race people are cruel and men and do not like horses. Most horse race stables cost more then the house that the owner is living in. They have the best food...care...heated stalls...cleaned everyday....the horses are brushed and washed everyday and they have the best medical care. But these individuals breed horses to a standard. Are horses sold or given away that do not meet a standard..some are...but some are to high strung because they are bred to be full of energy and power to run...most people could never ride a race horse because they do not know how to handle them. So, culling means more about "eliminating" wether it be by killing, giving away...eating...etc...etc. In animal husbandry world it is not uncommon at all to cull a healthy animal because it does not meet the standard. I worked at a dairy and lots of cows were culled because they did not meet the milk production standards. The very individuals that cull animals....treat the animals that they keep...with the best care imaginable. Anyway...most fanciers try to give them away as food first.

To most breeders culling a bird means ending it's life. It also means that breeder is a responsible breeder. If a bird does not meet your standard you should not pass it on to others. It is best for the hobby.

If you are not up to culling responsibily then you should rethink if this is the hobby you want to get involved in.

It is not an easy thing to do, but it is the only responsible thing to do.

Don't pass junk on.

You know I am quite sure that each and every person that has responded to this post had a difficult time culling thier first bird and a s amatter of fact I know guys that still would rather take a bird to the dog trainer than kill it themself. I feel that when you realize just what we are trying to do as breeders of these great birds you to will understand why we do what we do. The last thing a guy wants to hear through the grapevine is that he sells nothing but crap or that his birds are shitty because he was nice enough to give a guy some culls that at the time really wanted them. Sounds crazy but I hear it all the time from guys complaining about birds they bought from ol so and so. Like I said in the last post you started I think you need to take a long look at what it really is that you want to accomplish with your rollers and stick to that and either get on board or leave the breeding of true rollers to those of us that really understand the breed. I think it is insane, My Uncle breds Iranian Highfliers, and he especially likes the blue bar saddle, So if a baby is hatched and it is a mismark he snappes its neck.

Your uncle could have sold them instead. That was his choice.

Hey Igor, so you are saying we are "insane" for following good animal husbandry practices? Even after several people have provided sufficient reason and logic to justify the practice which has gone on for thousands of years?

Besides being emotional, about the issue, what practical insight or suggestions do you have? To what extent would you like to take responsibility to care for everyones culls?

I hope you are actually reading our posts and trying to educate yourself and not presuming to "lecture" all of us about your opinion...

None - your uncle sounds like a responsible breeder to me. What he is doing is not insanity. He is taking care of his responsibility in a responsible manner.

I believe that culls should be killed. I eat fricassee pigeon also but I will not spread culls to others. Personally, I do not believe in taking culls to the pet shop either. Some young fancier will bring home junk and may get discouraged with our wonderful hobby.

LD,

I totally agree. Culls should be killed, eat them if you want. Don't pass your junk on!

I have even heard of flyers cutting off bands and releasing them.........that is a nasty thing to do.
