Hey, I was just wondering how to make my birds roll more. They only roll once then after awhile they roll once more. Should I inbreed my stock to Increase the rolling, Or should I breed a rolldown from a friend with one of my pigeons, that rolls once. So that the Bimingahm rollers will roll much more. The rolldown from the friend does roll to the ground but doesn't hit the ground. He rolls so much that blood fills his eyes.

I would never use a rolldown for breeding purposes. A rolldown is a cull.

But wont it make the Rollers roll better, Then when i breed my rollers to the rolldown, then either breed the cross to my rollers or to the same nestmates from the cross?

Why don't you just get a quality stock and breed them. If the ones you have don't cut it, purchase quality rollers and save yourself allot frustrations.

What appears you have are culls, and rolldowns are culls. So breeding culls to rolldowns culls yeild a result of culls. Where is the advantage?

"But wont it make the Rollers roll better"

Better rollers make rollers roll better. If your birds aren't doing what you want, toss um and get some that do what you want. Sure will save yourself a ton of time.

You havent told us if these are young birds or old birds, how much you feed them, how often you feed them, how many you are flying in a kit, or how large your loft is. All these things make a big difference to frequency of rolling. If your birds roll at all, Im guessing you could tighten up your management and make your birds roll much more and much better. Breeding from a rolldown that rolls blood in its eyes will lead to future regrets. Crossing a rolldown into a really stiff strain of rollers sometimes increases depth and frequency but its a gamble. A rolldown will not make anything better. You will get rolldowns from a rolldown. Why have this negetive gene in your gene pool?

I've tried that before and it doesn't work, your birds will either become rolldowns or roll 1 revolution, If you are trying to get competition rollers I suggest you try to get a proven pair or start a line.... I just buy the proven pairs to save time, remember that it isn't like where you put a roller that rolls 1 revolution and you mix it with one that rolls 50 revolutions doesn't mean you can get a bird that rolls 25 revolutions... these birds can only roll after a specific parent, Strong lines don't mix...

people who have rool down dont want to get money from people, they just want to sell them because they dont feel like culling them, and their might be people out there looking for roll down, just like polar rollers.

You guys may not know this but "none" is a high school kid who has no money to buy any stock. I offered him some good Rollers at a cheap price and told him he could pay me later after he got a job this summer if he'd pay the shipping and get me a box but I haven't heard back from him, so I am assuming he can't even afford the shipping. So, maybe someone in Portland OR can help him get started right?

>>The rolldown from the friend does roll to the ground but doesn't hit the ground<<

Is this bird in question a real rolldown since it never hits the ground? Sounds more like a "Hot" bird.

none,

Beware of the bird that is hot. Look for the birds that are always in control of the roll. A good solid performer of 20 to 40 feet would be nice and one that does not bump the ground coming out of the kit box. Keep everything negetive out of your gene pool that you can.

We will start in small chunks of information. One thing you will find there are some areas of this hobby that no matter how different the answers are they will all be right. You have to set your own goals based on what you like and then stick to it. Don't allow yourself to be jerked around too much. Listen to those breeders like Blevins, Campbell, Luna, Billings, Urbon, some dumb fireman form Woodland, CA, Tony (the boss of this sight),Knaylor, McCormick, and yes even Ball (just kidding Cliff), Dr. LD and many others who come into this site regularly. They are truly great people and will help you. They have strong opinions, but that is why they are good for the hobby.

Stay with us.........no matter how ignorant we get(LOL)

None...go to the National Birmingham roller site and see if there is anyone around the Portland area from the member list. Then e-mail them. tell them what you are looking for and that you are just starting out. If you lived closer to me...I would get you some birds. e-mail me at paulfullerton@sbcglobal.com. I may be able to get some of the guys from our area to get some squeekers together that you can fly out and see if I can't get them shipped to you. So e-mail me.

Paul - I am just checking to see if you read my posts(LOL).

Kevin - I am settling in. My birds are struggling. Getting roll downs from birds that previously didn't give me problems. I think they are just simply out of shape and just couldn't restrain the roll. I got to get them in shape and I have missed a couple of rounds with my breeders. The move was hard on them and then I re-did my kit boxes and I think that confussed them.

Hey, I still owe you for some dues. I know you are going to resist them, but I am going around you to Bill Crider(LOL)

Nice hearing from you..........if for any reason you come this way I have a place for ya to stay.....THIS INCLUDES EVERYBODY ON THIS SITE(even the ones I don't agree with(LOL). I live in the Memphis, TN area.......let me know
