Scott, that's the key! A person has to SEE it to know the difference, and the sooner they see it, the less time wasted on mediocre birds. This subject reminds me of a time in the mid 90's when I gave my nephew some rollers to get him started. He would tell me how great the youngsters were performing and to come on over and check them out. I did go over many times to check them out and they did perform, some with good depth and frequency, but he thought depth and frequency equaled quality. I told him he hadn't seen real quality...at least not yet. Then one day he called about this blue check white flight hen that rolled like nothing he had seen before and he wanted me to come over. I knew at this time he had probably SEEN his first quality roller. I did go check out the birds fly and that one hen was a 25' ball with incredible speed and nearly invisible wings and had set the bar for his breeding program. Without seeing it he would probably still be breeding for depth and frequency, but thanks to that one bird he finally knew what quality was and knew which direction to take his program. After that, the depth and frequency took a back seat to quality, because he was finally able to SEE it.

Russ, whats real quality? pin it down to a one if you know so much about quality. To me, quality seems to be all over the place. Look one guy says, this is my quality, the next guy says no this is the real quality here, and the next guy say look, Pensom said this though!..then *&*$#@@ your honest eyewitness example please, so that others can benefit. like a hard ball it is hardball

Quality is in the eye of the beholder.... Perfection is self explanatory when you see it. I've seen it and it was, well, beyond anything I could accurately describe beyond using the visual of a blue fuzzy lemon-shaped object for 25 or more feet. Brian.

roller,
You're talking alot, but aren't saying a damn thing. Just one long line of critisizing, but not offering any wisdom; any advise.
You make noises as if no one in this thread really knows a damn thing about birds, but you. I know that is not true.
Give us some bread to eat, man.

Hardball, you seem to be showing more arrogance and antagonism than anything else. But for the record, the quality I'm referring to is the spinning ball type of roller. Straight and true with incredible velocity like a spinning ball. And by the way, If you read anywhere in my post about me 'knowing so much about quality' please share it with me. Or better yet, for the benefit of everybody, why don't YOU enlighten us about quality? Thank goodness you showed up here when you did to set us all on the right path!

Russ, it wasn't so hard was it, you stold Pensom's definition. My friend and don't we all want a bird that can do that.
the problem is...most top kit birds don't even roll like a ball..only from the side, they look like a ball, but from the front and back position, more like a spinning blade or fan or yoyo like effect. Do you still call that "like a spinning ball" I don't think I would, it's spinnig yes, but not a ball. and I know what your description looks like too, cause I strive for Pensom's def. also. round as a ball like a hardall
