what type are best. I'll be mixing wheat with peas for my kit bird mix but wanted to get some input on the different types available and which types are best for kit birds before I go to the feed store and order what I need. Thanks!

Most of the peas available to us here in the states are Canadian peas (big white ones), Maple Peas (big brown ones), Austrian Peas (medium sized green ones) and Vetch peas (small dark green ones.) There might be a few more but these are the only ones I have ever seen available for birds. If you are mixing up your own, then go for the Austrian or Vetch. The pea is easier for them to consume and you have less likelihood of certain birds shying away from them due to their size.

Brian is right on the money. If there is any feed laying around under the breeding pens, it will be those expensive Canadian and Maple peas...guaranteed. I don't waste my money on them if can help it. YITS, Clliff

Darin I only keep one pea on the property, and that is the Austrian pea , it will ruin the at qaulity first but you need it to bring the qaulity on.
I use it as my main protien source before hitting them with carbs (Wheat)and dropping them in performance wise.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting On older well tone kit of performers i use a small amount of mix peas Buffalo peas, austrian peas, trapper peas and maple peas, and canadian peas but only a table spoon, per- bird. To build them up and than. Mix a special feed to give to them for about 4 days works for me.
