I've just purchase a bird at a local farm and it looks so great. it has two bands on its legs. i was saying to myself. "Is is a goo birds, that's why there are 2 bands." Is it true that two bands means good. I know that all birds that are in stores are rejects, but is there any chance that they may be good.

Well,

2 bands does not mean that it is a good bird. All my birds are banded with two bands...they have the regular band and then a custom band with my name, city, state, and phone number....just in case they get lost....and to prove that the bird came from my loft. I have culled plenty of birds with two bands if they do not make the cut. Most fanciers do not want there culls or junk birds out there with there custom bands...because if someone gets that bird and it sucks....would you want people to think that you give culls or crappy birds away. As for a bird coming from a store...who knows...you can breed it in see...it is only a small amount of feed and a years time to see if the bird has the goods to pass on or not...just my thoughts.

Looks account for little or nothing. If it doesn't put out in the air then it shouldn't be in your loft. I personally would not include this bird in my breeding program for until I considered a few things. First this bird should be quarentined for atleast two weeks. God only knows what diseases it might bring int o your family. Second does the bird even roll and roll well? Don't just put any bir into your vreeding program because it has two bands or looks good. If the bird doesn't even roll then all you are doing by putting it in your breeding program is watering it down or even setting your family back years? Third does this bird have anything to offer to my family of birds that they is missing. Lastly if you are seriously trying to build a quality family wqhy are you buying birds from a pet store? Is there not any roller men in your neck of the woods? Man you are just going to become frustrated putting random birds into your coop. Get a path and stick with it or you won't get anywhere. If picking up stray birds from pet stores is part of your program then you are eventually going to meet with nothing of qulaity in the end. I strongly suggest you not put this bird into your program atleast until you have weighed all of the pros and cons and it has proven itself to be a quality roller. Hell it may not even roll then why would you put it in your loft at all. Keep in mind all of the guys who are at the top stuck to a plan and culled hard.

Washington, if you bought them from Magnolia, they are culls. I often send my culls down there as they give me a buck a piece for them. Good birds worth your time are at a breeder's house, not at a pet shop or bird farm.

I agree with Brian. No matter how the bird looks its there for a reason. Kevin

washington, the mystery of this bird could be a fun thing to find out about and it could let to a window of opportunity for you.Find out who bred the bird,it could have been an important bird to him, that could of been stolen, roof trapped, strayed in by someone by over fly or a breeder that got away and sold to the pet store. Usually fanciers dont band with personal breeder bands unless it hade some kind of value, i have experinced with other people. You have the club logo and the address band, find out and most important you could meet a good friend, ive met a couple of real good friends this way also..... LATER

not all store birds are rejects, have you every thought that maybe a fancier has too much birds and sells them to the store?

Birds sold to the pet and feed stores are not birds a person would consider breeding from. You breed from your best, not send them to the pet shop. If you have too many, you get rid of the least necessary, the culls, the ones you will not miss. That means if they are of any quality, they will not be the ones making that trip, nor the ones a person looking to breed good rollers should look to acquire.

Brian - Agreed. The birds that are sent to the pet shops are other people’s culls. Go and visit many lofts and watch the birds in the air. Then make a decision on what you want and go from there.
