Young pair has twice hatched chicks that appear normal but weaken and die after 2 or 3 days. Their crops are empty and they seem to have possibly been too weak to feed or not fed.I use a colony breeder loft and all other pairs and chicks are fine. thanks in advance Curtis Miller

Sounds like they didn't feed the little guy. You need to keep an eye on them. Feed your birds then watch the pairs. Shortly after they fill their crops good parents will go directly to their babies. I am willing to bet you that this pair was not doing this at all. I would give them anther chance if they don't get it try pairing them with experienced birds or just cull them. C.J.

This pair appears to have a poor hatchability problem. It is a fault. My advice is to not breed from them if you don't want this problem in your loft. Break them up and mate them to others to determine which parent causing the problem.

The parents dont feed any babies the first day. It takes that long for the pigeon milk to get flowing. The babies survive the first day on the egg contents at the time they hatch which are sucked into the navel during hatching.
Its unnatural for any pigeon not to feed its young. If these are yearling parents split them up and remate.
The babies may not be lifting their beaks up to the parents to be fed. That would be because they are ill. I suspect paratyphoid. Kevin

Thanks Kevin, these babies did appear weak after hatching and were laying out flat in the nest.I now also suspect paratyphoid. This is a colony loft.Do I need to treat the lot or just this pair.If treating all is the answer how will this affect the pairs currently with eggs and babies. thanks, Curtis

Rosie, I would think more of Salmonella. Pigeons can be carriers, might be sending it to the chicks via the yolk sac. Hence the small hatch size and mortality rate of two days. You might have to consult a vet on how to if,you can,rid them of the salmonella. yits v99

Paratyphoid is caused by the salmonella bacteria. Its difficult to get rid of. Go to Chas. Siegel & Son pigeon supplies and see what they say. I think you should stop breeding. Break up all breeding pairs. Treat all birds with Baytril or similar expensive but effective drug. If only a few birds have the problem then break them up and dispose of them or treat them in a separate loft. Did your breeders come from a variety of lofts in the last year, or have they all been in only one loft for the last year? If they have been in only one loft, you will probably have to treat the lot. If only a couple of birds exhibit the disease you could cull them and carry on with the rest and fingers crossed. Kevin
