If the bird is ash-red and shows flecking in the ash area (tail usually) its a cock.
If the pair is blue or black cock and ash-red hen then all blues/blacks will be hens and all ash-reds will be cocks with flecking.
A pure ash-red cock with no flecking mated on a blue or black hen will produce only ash-red daughters (or other colors like rec red). All cocks will be ash-red with flecking.
Similar color situation with yellow and other dilute colors, since dilute is sex linked like ash-red.
Usually mature cocks coo with a 2-barrel sound. Hens coo with only one low tone followed by ordinary higher tone.
If the bird lands on the floor or perch and coos turning a full circle its usually a cock. If it turns only half circle its usually a hen.
On average cocks have bigger more masculine heads. Hens often have slightly flatter head and more refined beak and type. Kevin

After a while you can just tell when you look at them. As my squeaks get bigger I can tell usually by four weeks which is which. If you feel the vent and it feels big enough to push an egg thru it probably is a hen. Try it on some birds you know the sex of.

Long skinny breaks = hen Fat wide breaks = cocks
I try to band all my cocks on the right leg (opposite leg with personal band) and all my hens on the left leg. Now and then, I'll screw up with a cock bird having the wrong side band... usually works out. Thor

a female usually is chased by a male, a male usually acts territorial and coos alot females seem to cull only when they are defending a nest or theirselves, also if a pair lays egg a female will usually take morning then night the males seems to sit on the egg during the day.. this is how I can tell my males from females....hopes this helps

the way i was taught is this... hold the bird in your hand , upside down use your middle finger, to measure the keel bone. cocks will be on average one quarter of an inchlonger then hens. check this with a few of your birds that you know for sure the sex.with about 10 or 15 minutes practice it is almost fool proof. I`ve used it on friends birds and can tell them which is which and am almost always right. good luck. p.s. hi Tapp butch

Kellinos,
I checked your way. There were some smiles and some frowns just like you said. I checked with another device and checked with your method and it checked out! This is a great way of checking, and can be done when you band the babies. Thanks for the info!! Does anyone else use this method?

I agree wth Monty, but adding that the wattle on the cocks wider beak is puffed up while the hens lays much flatter. Richard A.

Igor,
I have heard this technique before and I have tried it. The success rate for me was faverable, but not a 100%.
It is interesting that your parents where involved in pigeons. Did they give you some guidlines about cross breeding different breeds?

I've had good look by holding the bird upright with their feet in hand as if your holding a sandwich bounce the bird up and down in a slow motion if the tail goes up its a hen if it goes down its a cock
