Go to your city's web site and look in the city ordinances. It might be under municipal codes. Most large cities and even smaller ones too have ordinances in regards to the keeping of birds and poultry in residential areas. Often pigeons are classified as poultry. And yes, most of the time the problem is with a neighbor who turns you in. It is best to know your zoning ordinances and where you stand. Brian.

This is true. each city has different rules. Also someone has to complain. I know that in most cities even if you are over the limit unless someone complains thay really cant do anything about it. A friend of mine had a complaint about a shed being too close to his fence and when they investigated that they saw the birds. He fought it and won. he got the code changed and then moved to a different city.LOL Kevin P.S. if the jerk still looks at this site he can add something to this.LOL

You can still call just do it from a phone booth not near your home. Don't use your real name or don't give your name and just say you were wondering what the by law isregarding the keeping pigeons. C.J.

Here in Hawaii the legal limit is 50,and you do need a permit which is inexpensive. The fine is around $200 dollars for unpermitted birds. The codes here are outbuildings 10' fromthe property lines 20' from abutting neighbors res. for earshot, which ever applys. The outbuilding needs to be properly permitted as well. They tried to ban poultry here 2 years ago and were shotdown,so I have awhile longer,LOL.I'm lucky in the fact I have a block privacy wall.I think if you have an open fenceline or even chainlink there could be trouble somewhere down the line.My neighbor has an in- law set-up and a prissy, pampered daughter that did live there, she complained of noise for awhile and sent her mother over to fight her battle.I told the mother that I couldn't put little pigeon muzzles on these birds and they only made noise around feeding time. They know how well I take care of these birds and I had the forthought to keep the roofline of the coop even with the top of the privacy wall.I asked the mother if she was willing to split the cost of relocating/rebuilding the loft I would do so at their request, talk about the sour look.Well Mrs. Prissy moved out because the birds conflicted with her newly divorced lifestyle of comming in at 4 in the morning and sleeping all day, yahoo!!!But seriously, these folks lived on the block since the begining of time and complain to everyone about everything, like they own beyond their property. They are now concentrating on my highschool buddy, across the street, who REVV'S HIS ENGINE TOO MUCH and who's security light shines in their bedroom, hehehehe,.Thats life in the tropics,LOL...Aloha,Todd PS Iam very cordial with these folks and my kids play with there grandkids whenever they visit.

It is important to know exactly where you are zoned. There are often different zones within a city's limits and as I have seen before, a 9-5 code enforcement officer might not realize what zone you are in, or care. That happened to a friend who got smoked out by a neighbor. After some researched she called the officer that sited her and told her she was zoned to be able to keep pigeons, explaining where she is zoned. The citation was dropped and the neighbors were tight lipped from then on out. That is why I moved to a town that embraces a rural atmosphere. It is comfortable knowing that I will always be able to have birds. Of course my retard neighbor has dilusions that someone over here is shooting shotguns and calls out the po-po who swarm the joint like a swat team. Stupid neighbors. Brian.

Brian Who was it a year or two back that got away with the pigeons cuz they went before the commitee and showed them pigeons are not poultry? Seems the ordinance was for poultry not pigeons and this fancier was smart enough to know the difference. The commitee didn`t want to write a new ordinance so it was dropped for fear of seeming to be "after" one guy.

Kenny, I don't know of that past post, but I have known a few guys whose city listed pigeons as poultry. In the county I live in they actually removed pigeons as poultry, but failed to assign them into another category which actually made more problems. I think it depends on what kind of county or city the person lives in and how cooperative the city officials are. The AU has legal beagles on retainer just for circumstances like this. I would recommend to anyone who was under such scrutiny to contact the AU for a recommendation. Brian.

I looked up my municipal ordinance . It says no more tham 12 fowl or poultry per 1/2 acre. Fortunately my neighbors like my birds. I heard one say the other day" That was a good one" when one of my birds hit a 20. I let their kids pet them over the fence.I even named a couple of squeaks after their kids. If a bird thats the same color does a good roll I will tell Ian thats "his" bird. When he sees it. All he knows it is a white bird. Close enough for four year old.

To avoid this kind of problems with neighbors, I bought the house next door. Problem solved.
