I was wondering what you think about using preventative medicines. If you do use something what is it. My birds all appear to be healthy I was just wondering if I should be giving them something as a precaution.
Thanks for any input, Tim

outside of clean conditions maybe apple cider vinegar (1 tblsp. per gal.) maybe once a week or two. and maybe some vitames and electrolites a couple times a month, and good grit, works for me. if disease hits, most of the time there is nothing that seems to help. my 2cents jerry

I agree with On a.
Clean conditions, and nutritious feed program is better than any preventative medicine. The only thing I would immunize for would be the paratyphoid.

Once again I will extoll the virtues of pellets. Medicated pellets or feed used on a consisitent basis, in conjuntion with a healthy living environment will be sufficient for any program.

Some fanciers go to extremes when it comes to cleanliness. Personally I feel that a little mess is acceptable and actually exposes the birds to a small amount of the bacteria(s) aiding in the natural antibody growth and strengthing nature allows.Another key is dry and airy, not drafty, living conditions. Fullfill these requirements and you will have healthy birds.

In all of animal husbandry the way to prevent diseases is to avoid as much stress as possible with your animals.

What can cause stress? Unsanitary living conditions, poor nutrition, overcrowding, aggression, irregular maintenance etc.

Apple Cider Vinegar is a good additive to the water because it lowers the pH, which helps protect the birds against bacterial infections.

I would never use any kind of drugs unless absolutely necessary and the condition has been properly diagnosed. A good natural immunization is a three day fast (food only) before breeding season.

Tim,
By the way, that apple cider vinegar should be the natural kind with the sediment still in it.
