Just wondering how other fanciers choose an out cross when needed or to expand your gene pool.Do you choose because of a pretty bird, nice type, color, pedigree,or because it came from a famous person? I look first for velocity--style--type---frequency and making sure this family line has a high quality percentage history, the same or better charastaristics and quality,,, i would not be afraid to use these birds regardless of who bred it......thanks and later .......R-LUNA

Looks mean nothing. It must have something that ypur family doesn't and needs badly or you are just setting your program back.

I like to use a family that has alot of the same traits that my current family has and one that can bring in traits I am looking for. Look does have something to do with my decision because I prefer my birds to be small, short cast and tight feathered. I also feel I can get a good idea of character by the appearance of a bird. Since I like what I've got, I don't need to re-invent the wheel.

guys
I was thinking for an outcross to go back a few generations and bring in a lightly related bird that meets the criteria for your need.

Greed - I have always believed that a person should only outcross for a reason. My Bruce Cooper family goes back 40 years without outcrosses. The birds are strong, excellent feather, good frequency, velocity and great expression. The expansion of gene pool, to me, is not a reason to outcross. You need to know why you are out crossing and how is the outcross going to possibly help your family. I have noticed that many individuals outcross just for the sake of it. This is fine if this is what you want to do but for me I would have to have a reason. I prefer line breeding. Just my view.

LD,,,,what up,,,we do agree there should be a reason for the outcross but for some reason fanciers run into a block wall ethier high percentages of bumping- roll downs- or becoming stiff or seldom, so the time will come for the fancier to look for that special out cross, what ever reason might be... Even the late great PENSOM needed it and went to ENGLAND to find for his "514-LINE" that went seldom....later .....R-LUNA
