I am very new to the hobby. Have one question today but probably more to come. I have in front of me a 1 pint bottle of (Heinz)apple cider vinegar bought at grocery store for $1.00. 5% acidity. Is this what everyone uses for their birds or am I way off track? Would appreciate any input or advice. Thanks, JWilli

I buy mine at the grocery store. Never have seen the name mothers on it. Stuff stinks like a drunk's breath in the morning, but works great. Wouldn't trade it for anything and the birds have never been better since using it routinely.

The organic Apple Cider Vinegar ACV from the Health store is quite a bit more expensive. It has not been pasteurized and therefore has additional enzymes that are healthy for your pigeons ("mother" it is the brown stringy stuff in the bottom of the organic vinegar). "Mother" is not the most important thing that the ACV does for your birds. ACV is acidic. Salmonella bacteria does not do well in an acidic environment. The birds digestive system as well as there dropping become acidic, thus decreasing the chance that your birds will get a Salmonella bacteria infection.

I use Bragg's ACV...it is a dark brown color and organic. That is that brand I see at most pigeon supply sites and stores. You can get Bragg's from a grocery store...but is usually a special order item. i went to raleys and talked to there special foods manager and she ordered it and had it in the store in 2 days. I think I paid 15.00 for a gallon. Lasts a long time

Most literature I have read and websites I have visited say make certain you get the ACV with the "Mother". It has many vitamins and minerals in it that the birds need plus the acidity to prevent disease in the digestive tract. It is not that expensive (much less than all the vitamins we have given our birds). Mine costs about $4.50 per quart or about $15 per gallon. I put one tablespoon per gallon about three times per week. I use Bragg's Raw Organic ACV with the "Mother" that I get in any health food stores. I use it myself. It helps on muscle stiffness, arthritis, cancer preventative among other things. It is just a good natural preventative. Hope this helps.

You guys say that you noticed an almost immediate improvement. Improvement in what? I do a weekly teaspoon per gallon. I don`t get any sick birds but no great performances either just from the ACV.

Hey Jammer, good post. I give the birds ACV almost everyday, breeders, kit birds and separated pairs. I have seen no ill effects from it and have noticed the flys don't seem to like it either.

I will put some in a bottle of water and spray the breeding trays, loft floor and breeding pen enclosure.

Reduces odor as well. I can say that birds appear more healthy and young birds don't seem to show signs of coccidiosis when weaned and on their own.

Tony,

I myself give the birds ACV about twice a week. I used to give it to my livestock too! Anyway..>I do not know if this is true..but I was told by a Vet-professor in Avian Science from UCD not to give the birds and livestock ACV everyday...it is acidic and it may affect birds in the long term with every day use with ulcers in the crop..You will not be able to tell..but it will be uncomfortable for the birds. I was told that many years ago with my goats too...that it may harm the lining in the stomach over a long period of time...so I will give them some twice a week and nice fresh water all other times...sometimes some Electrolytes. Anyway..just thought I would pass that info on...true...I do not know...but this professor is very respected at UCD.

Thank you Paul. As always moderation in anything is the best way to go. I also give it to them about once a week or so but not everyday. Some times maybe for a week strait then once every week. As long as they are healthy, then I leave them alone. Some vitamins and minerals now and then is also given from time to time.

Remember, I don't won't my rollers too strong. Otherwise, I will be flying homers.

Jay
