When do most of you separate your breeding pairs for the year. It would be helpful to post when you put them together also so as to provide a point of reference. Thanks!

I generally put my pairs together in December and break them up about now. I've broken up most of my pairs now, the only remaining ones together are either feeding off their last round or a few pairs I left together to breed a round of youngsters for a friend. Brian.

Brian, I have birds in the breeding loft since March ,2 pairs, and May,3 more pairs, since that is when I aquired them. The one english pair I have are on their 4th round already, laying new eggs 13 days after hatching previous round,no fosters. How many rounds would you recommend letting them go on hatching and raising young before splitting the pairs up? Thanks, Kel.

Only you can really answer that question Kel. How much room do you have for the kit birds? How many do you want to breed? Does your climate allow you to breed into fall and early winter? If feed and kept healthy, pairs can successfully breed all year long. The only time they will naturally stop is generally during the late summer when the molt comes on heavy. If you are keeping them healthy I wouldn't worry about burning the pairs out. They would naturally take a break before you would ever have the chance to step in. Brian.

O.K. Brian thanks again, I have lots of room for more kitbirds and we have the warmest climate in Canada in wintertime due to the warm Japanese current in the Pacific. We might get a week of temps below 25F.Gawdsowncountry.You'd wonder why the good lord Jesus wasn't born here but there is some difficulty finding three wise men and a virgin in these parts!! Really need to get into a fostering program, just don't have enough birds to do that yet.My kit of only 8 Neibel birds are really starting to perform, yesterday some were rolling 50-60ft.What a gas watching them!!Health to the birds!!!! Keep on Rollin', Kelly. ---------- Kelly

I usually put my birds together in January 1st or so. They continue to breed until the job is done. I usually cull pretty hard..after the world cup. That opens quite a few perches. When the perches are all filled...then I will do a couple rounds for friends that want birds and fill the NBRC auction and World Cup auction orders. I usually end up splitting them up in September and they get a break until Jan.

GUYS I will breed 15-20 more. I have to count bands first. In the future I will pair in Jan and split them up in May. I will breed 50 or so a year. I run three pairs and 8 fosters. The pairs will differ from year to year depending on performnce the previous season. I will also take a few breaks from breeding to fly out kits.
Next season I will do just that. I have a kit that is gonna be two years old and the kit from this season I need to fly out for the season. There will be no need to breed til I fly out both kits and see what I have and where to go. I have a couple of pairs from a couple of lines to breed/foster for concert performance. They will be coming on this season. Do whatcha GOTTA do to win,to have the best birds possible, draw the focus down to a pinpoint of blinding light.
It has been addressed on several different forums the difference between us and the euros in breeding and selection. I plan on bridging the gap and being the first WC winner from Texas with Heine as the judge. I feel by paying more attention to performance and less to pedigree, I will be successful. In the words of Myagi " Daniel-san! YOU MUST STAY A FOCUS!".

when the pairs are seperated, which stays in the nest area? Do they need to be married again or do they remember their spouse? Thanks Darele

That is a good question about remembering there spouse. If I have a pair that I am going to keep together...I do not break them up. I keep them together and have them sit on wooden eggs. I see no reason to stress out the poor little boogers. Now if I am going to break up pairs to give them new mates...I usually leave the cocks in the breeder loft so that they can keep there nest box...and pull the hens.
