I just recently bought a male birmingham roller from a guy by the name of daniel smith.. It has an XxX band and was issued in 1997.. I saw the performance and loved the bird, now I am wondering.. what are the chances of it still reproducing?

Yes. I have a 13 year old bird that is still going. I also had a bird that was five and stopped. Age has little to with it. C.J.

You should be good. If a 1986 cock bird still can fill eggs, why not a '97. I am currently breeding out of acouple of '97 hens. All producing well. Thor

ususally within the first days when the hen lays her eggs they turn a shade of gray, I also hold the eggs toward the sun and you can see the veins starting to form all troughout the egg

Hey PF, Looking at your first statement I have to wonder. And I think you might think the same thing. If that bird was flying at 10 yeras there might be a problem. Usually if a bird is 10 years old in a kitbox means one of two things. One, it's hasn't been good enough to put in the stock loft so it might have a problem that it never showed when you were there. I mean for 10 years and it's as good as you say it is and it still in the kit/flying? Two, maybe be the bird was in the stock loft before and the guy pulled it out. Either went sterile or wasn't a producer. So I guess you have to ask the owner of the bird and ask Him/Her why was this bird in a kit or flying at 10 years old.
Another thing in your first statement you said a male bird and in your last statement you said a her. So is it a male or a female reason why I asked it might take a while for a hen to produce if she has been flying.
And if you bred this bird do you have the same family to put back over this bird? and are you breeding something that is a proven bird to it? And how long have you been working with this family? just a few questions.
Thanks and best of luck Brian Middaugh

I agree with Brian.
BTW, that sounds like a Mike Curtis/Joe Kiser banded bird.
