Milo and wheat are grains. Grains are best for kit birds as opposed to pellets. There are those who do feed pellets of some level to thier kit birds, but they are few. I know of one who has had success with pellet feeding thier kit birds(Paul Fullerton).

Over all grains tend to made the kit birds more active as opposed to pellets. There also other grains that kit birds do well on besides milo/wheat.

SSPHXPS, milo/wheat is a grain. If they are yound birds feed them a good mix of grains, wheat, milo, salflour, peas, ext. There is a lot of good mixed grains.I use a 14 percent mix. If they are old birds then you can play with them.I'm not that far yet. I think a lot of flyers use wheat as a base feed.If they are a young kit let them be pigeons. And fly them till they are in the roll good. Then try wheat/ milo/ barly/ it takes alot of flying and years to learn your birds. I haven't got a lot of time under my belt, Just some common sence stuff I heard from some stable comp. flyers. Read some of the other post. There is a lot on feeding. Good luck!

Hey Nick

You forgot about me. I feed pellets instead of peas. I can`t get them here. 14% in the summer 18% in the winter.

Usually 1 1/2 cups w/m and 1/2 pellets for 22 birds. Flew 507 in the quals on this feed.

I am the same as Velo99..I use pellets in place of the peas. I use 28% and mix a 5parts wheat/milo to 1 part pellet. They DO NOT consume more water using pellets vs. grains...the reason being is that it is really cut with the grain. It took over a year to find the right mixture of pellets to wheat/milo. I also kept track of water consumption..no difference...but if you use 1 part grain to 1 part pellet like I do to my breeders they consume a lot more water. I use pellet with my breeders just during breeding season...during the winter they get the standard pigeon mix by "Winners Cup".

During the moult my birds get a tad more pellet mix and I go heavy on the sauflower to get them through the moult...I could care less about performance during the molt.

Old birds get Wheat/milo...most of the time and the pellet mix based on how they feel in the hand.

young birds get all they want of the pellet mix (as long as they trap well)..until they come into the roll...then I play with the feed a little bit.

Paul said something that cought my attention. The statement "depending how they feel in my hand" is a very important one when measuring the total health of your birds. They will tell you when they need a diet change sometime even before it shows in the performance by how they feel in your hand. A very important tool.

This is something I have learned in the three years I have been raising rollers. Don`t do anything but fly them and feed them till after the first moult. In between the moment of hatching and completing the moult they will change inumerable times. They will change even more during the three months after the moult as well.

Point is enjoy watching them fly and don`t overanalyze the first six months,or seven or eight. At nine months they should be "mature" and bear "testing out". Then you should really not cull any performer until he is two years old.
