You're confussing us. A rolldown is when a roller rolls to the ground; not to be confussed with bumping. A trait that is unwanted by a breeder of rollers. There is a breed that seems to roll upwards and I have forgotten the breeds name(I am sure Alan Bliven knows the breed). ---------- Snicker Rollers

I had one roll up, then right back down the other day. I pitched him up and he rolled up about 6 feet, then right back down. He goes into the rolldown pen. I am gonna collect all my rolldowns from this season and give em to the zoo. Tell em they are Hollywood stunt pigeons.

Hmm interesting. What is his thought on these? Why is he breeding from roll downs or in this case roll ups. Junk is junk and should be treated as such. His breeding program will never move forward with these birds. C.J.

CJ - I agree. These birds are not standard Birmingham Rollers and should be eliminated. Now, if you are trying to create a new breed that is different but realize they are not Birmingham Rollers.

well he tells me that he likes to watch the birds go splat! but that's just to cruel for me, I usually give him all my rolldowns and bumpers on the first day they hit the ground, he usually gives me his birds until they hit the ground. then I gotta give them back.. I don't know what he is trying to breed but I am sure he is not entering any competitions..

I have only seen a very few, so I am not the expert on this... Non bred by me. From what I have seen, the first couple of wing beat is of an un-natural motion. It seems to thrus the bird up ward and as it tucks and spins, it'll hold that air space for half a sec or so before dropping back to it's original position. The ones I have seen are above average velocity in the roll. Say 10 foot rollers at best. They seem to not loose any depth when performing. But from my observation, it is just a mirror effect. The up ward motion throws us off.
It is similiar to what I have been reading about some of what the English Fanciers are breeding for. Spinners and not Rollers. Birds that rotate without loosing any depth. Hell, I like depth... who doesn't?
For what it is worth, the very few I have seen never had any style worth a squat. Two were axle and the other were a 'X'. Good speed, no style.
Thor
P.S. It is a free country. You pay the feed bill! All tho, most Clubs ban breeding from roll downs. It is a code of ethics.

For what its worth: any "code of ethics" used in the context that Thor was using it in is in my opinion just a phrase meaning an unwritten rule or gentlemen's agreement regarding some matter. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Around here they are never allowed to leave the property , any cronic bumpers or rolldowns are culled, to breed or keep flying birds that are smacking roofs injuring themselfs and what not is nothing short of cruel, put them down and allways breed towards stable birds. For thse that think you have to have such birds popping up in numbers to keep the roll need to study their birds more closely.

David, I suppose some live by it some don't. Like I said, it IS a free Country we live in.
I will qoute something from the Minnesota Flying Roller Group's organizational principles and procedures if possible... I know many people don't read it when joinning... "HUMANE PHILOSOPHY .... Of principal concern in the flying of rollers is the problem of so called 'Rolldowns'. The MFRG condems the deliberate flying of rolldowns, and encourages its members to mate their birds so as to avoid the production of such birds. Moreover, the MFRG urges its members to closely monitor the development of the rolling propensity in their birds, being ever vigilant for symptons of uncontrollability, and removing any rolldowns at the earliest possible time. However, just as it is inevitable that occasionally a thoroughbred race horse will shatter a leg while running and have to be destroyed, so too, it mst be recognized, that an occasional rolldown will appear in even the most concientiously cultivated loft of rollers. Nevertheless, the MFRG believes that as much as possible should be done to avoid the production of rolldowns." "ETHICAL TRADE ... Roller pigeons seem to be the most abundant of all breeds. Unfortunately, this abundance includes many worthless specimens. Although the MFRG does not involve itself in the peronal business dealings of its members, it frowns upon the selling of unworthy birds and urges its members to refrain from this practice."

Crack Tumblers roll upwards because they start their performance while flying straight up. But Birmingham Rollers should not fly up before performing and thus should Roll downwards.

Thanks Alan
I remember reading a conversation about a performance breed that was known for this behavior and if I am not mistaken it was you that described it.
