Hey everyone,
I just finished my walk in kitbox. It is 8' long x 48" wide and 6' 3" tall. I think I can get about 50 birds in there pretty easy. This will help my wife out, she can gang fly while I'm gone. And when I'm home I can use it to get a better grasp on my A-Team. Still have the free standing 4 stall and the 2 stall against the loft. But I want to try and fly the english way. I have been told this will make you a better conditioner if you have to stay out there and watch them and then call them in. I will give it a shot and if it don't work it will become another 4 pair open loft LOL LOL...
But there is plenty of light and ventilation. Dont know if I'm suppose to make it dark or just leave it open all around for them to see everything. When I get a chance I will post some photo of it and see what you guys think.
Thanks and best of luck

Brian,

The next building project is going to be a walkin for me. That way I can go out and play with 'em better especially when it is raining(LOL). Do you have it wired for lighting?

a 50 bird kit box? Why?
How are you going to possibly keep track of that many birds in the air. I personally think that you are trying to put to many birds in such a small area. My A team of twenty birds is in the same sized loft. I perfer to give them a little more room when I am expecting them to fly. The less stressed they are the better they perform. Atleast that is what I find.

CJ,

I have found that flying young birds in groups of 30-40 really help them develop...as they really come into the roll then I put them into smaller teams. Of course you are not looking over birds when you are flying in groups that big. Usually if I am flying a large group of young birds..the birds that are really coming into the roll tend to stand out..because all the other birds are doing flips or tail rides and a birds busts a 15' roll...it stands out. Brian also said it would make it easier on his wife....There are days I will fly my young birds and B-teams together....I will have 60 birds in the air...those are for emergecy situations...like not having time to fly. I just flew my young birds and A-team together this last week. We have a heat wave coming through and it is 90 degrees by 10am...SO I fly them together...if I flew them seperate it would be to hot by the time the first team was done flying ....I do it so they get the time under there wings...The A-team is coming into the molt so I do not care about there performance at this point...the other thing is..it actually brought the young birds together....they did not screw around at all those days....The big brothers were in the pack....LOL!! Anyway...I do not gang fly when I am preparing for a comp...NO WAY...the most I will fly in my A-team is 22 and I pull the 2 worst birds before the comp. The more young birds the better...I have found that flying my young birds in larger groups...keeps them up longer and they fly better...that just may be my birds...I have 30 perches in my Young bird box. Anyway...I do not feel that gang flying is bad...if you are short on time...or the heat rolls in...it is more important to get the birds fly time if they need it....I would myself only do every know and then.

Paul, has some valid points.I do fly from a 4x8 walkin, but they are only for holdovers and weaning young.Anything I consider an unproven kit bird is in the boxes getting regimented flight time, till they mature and are performance graded.Theres too much hanky panky going on in there,I feel ,to have a consistant effect.I hand toss a selected group to fly from there and when a major cleaning is needed I kick out as many as I'm comfortable with. They are easier to get fed and get watered, but I wouldn't consider it for any thing more than backyard enjoyment.Spreadout kitting, uneven feeding and uneven trapping would require more work and training time, tho I'm sure it can be done....Aloha,Todd

C.J & Nick,
The main reason for the walk in kit box is for my wife because I want my birds to be flown while I'm gone. This will allow her to mob fly the birds while I'm gone. Which at times could be up to 6 months at a time. Now I did say I would use it for my A-team when I'm home. because this will make me stand under them and watch them as they fly and get a grasp on how long they are flying.
C.J you said why place so many birds in a little area. Well let me see I have regular kit boxes that are 4' wide 40" deep and 38" tall and it handles 30 birds. Now my walk in kit box is 4' wide 8' deep and 6' 3" tall and only holding 50 birds man I say they have more than plenty than the ones in the kit box.
Nick being a electrician I think it have lights soon LOL LOL. I like it because it is very roomy. The birds are on one side of the kit box. The exit is very large so the birds wont hurt one another as they are leaving {One entire end is the door}.
But I want to mob fly until I can sort through the birds that are doing the work. Then place them in the right kitbox. Once I sort through all the birds then I will use the walk in for my A-Team. And if it dont work well I will have another open loft for my birds. Which I have 3 already plus the individual cages. Now my open loft for my breeder are the same size as my walkin. But I only keep 4 pairs in them. They are fosters for my individual breeding cages. And every now and then they will raise a round of there own.
This is something I though would help me. And I would share it with everyone in here.
Thanks Brian Middaugh

Brian,

I remember you being an electrician now that I think about it. I remember you going down to the Gulf area after Katrina. I have bought a two year house that I could use an electrician for about three days, where do you live?(LOL) Just kidding my friend!
