Do you all separate your breeders for the moult period? How long for?I figure I'm on the last round of young before their moult will start,so was thinking I should toss the next eggs laid and when the young are weaned split them up so all their energy can go towards their conditioning, hopefully putting them together for another round or three before winter.----------

Im finishing my breeding season now also. The molt starts for most breeding pigeons when they are sitting on there 2nd round of eggs. They begin by dropping their first flight feather. It then moves forward. This is the wing molt. About August, the heavy body molt begins. I wouldnt breed from pigeons at this time but some do.

for the last round I let each pair have one baby to raise. I have enough youngsters already. When they lay there next round of eggs I swap them with dummy eggs. When the last youngster is weaned I break up the breeding pairs and begin feeding them for the molt with lots of good feed. They are worn out and depleted after breeding. The molt is a good time to build them back up with good feed and vitamins and minerals and lots of baths.

Im talking about prisoner birds. I dont let them out when fed this way or Id lose them to an overfly. Kevin

Younger breedrs i do break up, but for the older breeders i keep together all year round because i have noticed with not just mine, but others fanciers older breeders and what they tell me, that sometimes if they get split up, when it comes time to breeding season it is harder for them to get back on track for breeding. They'll slow down on breeding and go through their moult anyway if kept together....

Al Hunt, one of the guys up in Lumby B.C. wrote and told me he breeds right through the moult and just makes sure they are well fed. This is his mix recipe.3 parts wheat,1 part peas,1 part 16% layer pellets and one part milo or safflower, but not both.I think if you started breeding late the birds will still be in good condition enough to continue breeding thru the moult.
