Just wondering how everyone is making out in the breeding department this year.
How many young you have already?
How many are starting to roll?
How many are you expecting to finish with?
How are the predators treating you?
I have 40 so far and all are showing great potential. I have had a little trouble with a cat but am managing to keep one step ahead. The raccoons are making me real nervous. I think my neighbor is feeding them and they fight all night long over the food. It sounds like someone is dying. They haven't come into my yard yet so I am keeping my fingers crossed. I have a live trap ready for them. I nope when it is all said and done to end up with 70 young and will cull from ther. All is well in ontario Canada. Hope the same for everyone else.

Hey C.J.
Howsitgoin??I started breeding my birds late so have 10 young ones in the kitbox, with 9 more hatching out as we speak.Haven't decided for sure whether to break the pairs up during their moult or not.?Some guys do,some don't it seems.2of my young ones from this english import hen I have are starting to roll nice at 2 and 3 months.Henrito(a troubled young lad of 3 months,he has been in so many half way houses being the first born to my loft) is rolling 10 ft or more sometimes,Frequent, and finally trained to the right kitbox.*If I shut down for the moult,I'll run them again in Sept for a couple more rounds before winter.I'm getting some roller nuts in the Thompson-Okanagan area to raise an extra round for me to pick up end of July so should end up with 20 or more squeakers from them.Everybody flies Monty Neibel birds out here, pretty much.Preds have been leaving my birds alone these days, darn Cooper I've been able to scare off by banging the heck out of a galvanised bucket(has a hole in it now!!)and yelling at him.Hot and dry out here humidity 35% daytime. All is well here on Gabriola Island B.C.GAWDSOWNCOUNTRY!!!
Health to the Birds!!!

Breeding is going pretty good! I have 30 young birds flying so far. I have 19 little ones in the breeding loft and 5 or 6 eggs. I have 15 in the hold over team. I have 6 eggs and then I am pretty much done for myself. I will keep breeding from my 4 new pairing for one more round. I will breed 8 young birds from my 4 best pairs for the NBRC auction. Then I will breed a round from everything I got for a friend in OHio. Before I shut the birds down...I will usually put an e-mail out to our local fliers to see if anybody needs a round for whever reason...then I shut them down for about 4-5 months...and start all over again. So far so good!

How many young you have already?
Banded 160 since January. Broke the last of the breeders up last weekend. Got five young kits flying.

How many are starting to roll?
Quite a few have been rolling for a couple of months. The oldest team is 6-7 months old and most of them are either into hard spin or just on the brink of committing.

How many are you expecting to finish with?
Breeding is finished. I'd like for them all to be here in six months, but that won't happen...lol

How are the predators treating you?
Red tails are ruthless!

Brian,
Are those red-tails fast enough to actually catch a pigeon? The idea about scaring the coops off the first few attacks seems to be working here.I talked to one guy on Earls list who uses those Catalonian Tumblers to outfly the hawks which soon get discouraged after not catching anything. He then starts to fly his BR's and the hawks ignore them.

Hi Guys;
I've had a terrible year.In February a racoon broke into my flycoops and killed 60 holdovers. Then in March a weasle got into my breeders coop and killed 9 great stock hens.I mated my birds at the end of March and bred 20 young.I put these 20 in my flycoop, and they were there for about 3 days and the cursed weasle got in again and killed them all.I reinfoced my coops and fixed them now, and am back to breeding again.I have 16 in my flycoop now and will be puting another 18 in this week.I have banded 63 so far ,minus the twenty first ones,so thats 43 and I have a lot more in the nest.I should breed about 100 this year anyway.I didn't mate them in Feb. as I was recovering from my second triple bypass.I was operated on 22 Dec./05 My first one lasted 13 years. Then I got pneumonia and kidney failure in Early Feb -spent 10 days in hospital for that.I'm all right now,but that pneumonia really knocked the crap out of me.I had no energy for about 3 months.I must be a tough old bird cuz I'm still here, and dont intent to go for a few years yet.You got to take life as it comes and not worry about it.A year to remember for me.I'll be 71 this month.

Don't see any hawks or falcons near my area, a few cats next door, but I don't worry that much, got 2 petbulls and a few big fat kicking chickens, and if they don't work i got a pellet gun haha, Man I love being in riolinda, love the crows, love the mocking birds, love the decoy doves but I hate the blue jays. there would be no chance of anything but rats that get under my loft, but even rats wouldn't dare climb 2 ft to the floor of the loft, haha.

Brian,
Who knows? Those silly buggers over on Earls are talking nasty to each other on that subject, but apparently they can fly fast enough to evade hawks and even the henerys.A couple of days ago the guy was offering a round of youngbirds to anyone on the list who needed them to help against preds. It's Bill Hart who has them.
