Food is not going to chance the color of a pigeon's eyes. They have two genetic choices, one is pearl and one is orange. All other colors are one of these two. Yellow is a lighter version of orange. Red and pink are different versions of pearl. In my Wests we breed for plate white eyes which don't have the intense blood vessels in the iris that you will find in say a racing homer, which by the way, it sounds like that is where your friend is getting his information. Yes, you can read a pigeon's healthy by looking at it's eyes, but it is something you have to sort of learn over time. It is like looking for character, same deal, only in this case some birds which are ailing will exhibit an expression that gives the feeling the are in pain or uncomfortable. Birds which are morbidly sick often have the blank, fish eye look. So yes, you can tell some things about a bird's health by looking at the eye, but I think you would get a better idea simply by handling the bird over using the eyes. Racing homer analogies and roller analogies are usually polar opposites. Here is a group of eye shots I did for my West club in reference to different eyes. This will give you and idea of what some eyes look like. Brian
