Guys,
I went from 4 pairs the first season to 5 main pairs, three pairs I actually breed and 6 pairs of fosters who are fosters in name only. It just ain`t their turn.lol So that gives me 8 pairs of fosters with three pairs. Minus one that is a pre pair for observation next season leaves seven. Okay new guys listen up! Don`t breed 47 different pairs trying to find the one. Knock em out with fosters two or three at a time time you find the "one" Breed up 10-15 of the little suckers. Fly them out and analyze them. If you are lucky you`ll get 4-5 out of twenty.I breed out 50 a season. Fly them out and analyze. Gonna take a long time so I won`t be bored.Who knows I could find one this season. I have one that was sent as a pre potent pair. I am using them as fosters.
Why? you ask. Because I know they are good. They are relatively young. As long as they are active in the pen their role is irrelevant. They will keep just fine. When I find the other two pairs in the next couple of years I will be set to breed some kick ass kits of rollers. Another thought,What if they don`t work well together? What if they need different amounts of feed? A solution is at hand. I have two pairs that are related and from the same years. Does this mean stability? Probably not. What it means is a benchmark,a place to start,...a PLAN for concert performance.
Thats what you do on those long December nights right after you get your pairs together on paper. Be your own worst enemy. Find the faults in the plan. The fine art of breeding is exactly that. An art.It takes practice and years of breeding and flying kits. Maybe one day I`ll figger it out. Until then I breed,I fly,I watch.
---------- If they don`t kit,they don`t score. Color don`t roll and peds don`t fly. It`s a comp thing,understand?

Hey Kenny(Velo),
Your signature is getting larger....pretty soon it will be a complete post all on it's own.......I understand it all and it is right on.
I also agree that you have to closely control and contain your breeding loft and program. Fosters are a good way to accomplish the control that is for sure.
Signature is great. If it gets any larger you might want to publish it(LOL). ---------- Snicker Rollers

I flew my birds for two years before I put the best to breed. I matched them together so both mates won't have the same faults. Yes, we all have faults. I breed from 8 pairs that exhibited the best performance and control and all the 5 primary traits. No fosters for me since they all are from the same well inbred family and the offspring are usually consistent. I also breed from individual compartments to make sure the true parentage for future evaluations when needed. So far, I bred 32 youngsters, 12 still in the nest and 2 pairs sitting on eggs. The end of this month is the end of the breeding season. Although, usually the end of June is the end of the breeding season for me but I needed an extra batch.
I have a test pair where both parents are Double grizzle whites. They were excellent kit birds with multiple depth and speed. They gave me some pure whites and some with red freckles youngsters here and there. So far I am very happy with the outcome. I'll determine if whites are for weddings or completion by the end of this year since I doubled up on double grizzle!!(lol).
