Hi all! Last weekend I went to a flea market with my uncle and he bought me a pair of birds. The guy said they were rollers. One has two white stripes on each wing. The other is completely black with some white tail feathers. Can anyone give me some advice on them and what I should do with them from here? I don't know anything about flying them and if I should. Will they even stay at my house if I did??? I've looked around on the net and have found a few places here and there and have tried to ask the same questions, but wanted all the help I could get.

Rocky,

Not sure if it's a pair you have there or 2 cocks 2 hen's, If its the same Sex I would fly them, if it's a pair breed them and Fly the young, that way you don't lose everything if you lose them.

Everything in this hobby/Sport takes time, just have fun with them and enjoy.

Scotty

Hi Scotty!

Thanks for the reply. These are my first birds ever. So I'm new to things. One of the birds laid an egg last night. So I guess that means at least one of them is a female. I'm really enjoying them so far. My uncle raised pigeons when he was my age (16). He's helping where he can, but lives too far away to come by everyday. My mom loves the colors too! She said they don't look like anything she sees down by her office. Anyway, I'll keep watching them and playing with them and see what happens.

Thanks again!

Hey BATLIZARD the best advice i could give you is for you to post the area you live and get in contact with someone near by with experinence that can help you get started right on rollers or join the N B R C , a gang of roller guys in membership through out the U S A..You will have to gain the trust of those persons you get in contact with, so when you do "DO-NOT blow that trust". There's alot of really good fanciers that will help.

does one of your bird dance a lot? like it puffs it's neck and sweeps it's tail on the ground, if it does, it has a strong chance of being a male. I suggest you buy a male from this site, (you already have a female if it lays eggs). Tony's birds are good performers. But if you are 16, I'm pretty sure you need your parents, if you really like this hobby you should buy a pair of ruby rollers, as a restarting point, so you would know these birds are proven birds... "step 1 aquire stock birds"[how to breed better rollers], to let them fly I usually lock them up for a month or so, but if you tape the wings, it usually takes 2-3 weeks for them to know their homes..

From past experience and experiences of others, flea market birds are not that good. Maybe only for fostering.

Hello -

I'm not sure what N B R C is. And if you have to be invited to part of it. I'm not sure what you mean by trust. I just have some rollers and would like to learn more. Niether one of the birds are really dancing or anything. I still only have the one egg. But the black one is sitting on it right now. I just checked on them. I looked at the ruby rollers here. I can't afford them. I asked my uncle to help too. He told me to ask why buying something else was better than what he bought me. I think it was rude. Specially since you all have been helping me. Anyway I'll keep looking at the ones I have and see what they do. Seems to be what I am getting everywhere.

NBRC is a club, National birmingham rollers club, So your uncle... did he use to raise rollers or hommers? and how long did he raise them... what was the purpose of quitting? (if he quit). what club does he/ did he/ belong to? need info about your uncle and do you have pictures of your birds, or even a video?

Oh yea, we need your info as well, like
Do you want to compete in the future?
(if so)what type of competition? (show/performance)
where do you live?
your name?
what breed specifically do you wish to breed?
your age?

these well help us out a little more

Dave is right, about 20 percent of the market birds go into the hold over loft and about 2 percent get to become breeders. I doubt from my past experience as well, that these are good birds, they are usually culls meaning they are birds that might ruin the kit performance and bad habit breeders.

Hi!

Thanks everyone for all the advice and education. Seeing as how I don't have a pen built yet I think the best thing for me to do is to get my feet wet with these two birds. Seems to be what I'm hearing from everyone out there. It is awesome that there are all these people that are ready to help out others. I'll get back to Stripe and Blacky. Those are the names I gave them. I will check back and give you an update.

Thanks everyone again!!!
Rocky

P.S. Tony - Thank you very much for offering one of your birds to me. I just need to get set up before I take on more - my Mom's quote - not really mine .

Rocky you to have a guy like Tony with the quality of birds he has, offer to send you a cock bird fi=or the price of shipping is a great honour. If you are serious about rollers I would take him up on his offer. The two you have purchased at the market are most likely culls. By culls I mean birds that weren't good enough to be in an experienced hobbiests loft. This then means the aren't top quality. If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for them? Or how much did your uncle pay? Next if you are going to get into to this hobby and be happy get the best birds that are offered. if you start with crap you will most likely in the end ve left with crap. No one out there builds a quality building with sub stamdard materials. There is a reason you buy quality birds. With Tony you will have quality birds.

If they are sitting on the egg(s) keep them and use them as fosters. Take it easy til you raise some birds to fly. Take the birds.

If your people will help you out you don`t need fancy right now you need inexpensive. Get em going and show your responsible and all the good stuff parents like. By the time you get enough birds to fly and put on a show, your parents will be convinced, or should be.

Build a simple box on legs for your breeders for now. Build another in a month for the babies. Make em nice with a little paint so Mom likes em. Get one 2x2x2 rabbit cage to use for a training/exercise pen. This should get you thru your first season or so.

Good Luck bro

If they don`t kit,they don`t score.
Color don`t roll and peds don`t fly.
It`s a comp thing,understand?
