All's been going well with the birds, then my best roller decides to start hitting the ground... after about 5 ground hits ( that I know of ), she seems to have figured out that it hurts... at least today she didn't roll down ( I flew em twice ). Now, I'v got a solid white ( almost ) that was really rolling great, today it hit 5 times, from 30 to 40 ft... Do young birds figure out not to roll down or are they just going to do it once too many times? That White really looks awesome when it's high enough not to hit the ground... it spins real tight & fast... comming in is when it gets in trouble.

you have to get them to fly higher, maybe feed them a little more protain to gt them to go up .some young will hit once or twice and figure it out, some will hit till they kill themselfs.good luck Hector. www.hcoyarollers.bravehost.com

Mark, you may have them a bit stressed or under condition, or it could be the family line. Do as Hector said feed them more, give them time to mature first ,physicaly and mentaly before you break them down, since there young birds. Good Luck on the finding out..

You want to fly your young birds frequently to make them come into the roll. Once they start rolling especially rolling down or bumping you dont want to push them. You want to back off. Move these dangerous birds to another kit box or catch them and feed them up while the others are flying. Fly the others 2x a day if you want but fly these problem birds no more than once every 2 days. There over stressed and you may be forcing them to become rolldowns. They may become rolldowns any way. But if you keep pushing them they will either roll down and injure thereselves or they will make a habit of not kitting and coming down early because they are too afraid of the roll and they are too stressed and weak to cope with it. i had a problem with 3 young birds rolling down 1 hit the garage roof and broke its wing so i had to cull him the other two bump the back lawn a couple of times and discovered that that hurts and havent done it since they are all from the same pair .they only did it when they were flying low they roll 15,20 when they are high enougth looking good to i was feeding them 50/50 wheat and milo but now they are on staight wheat . i have tried giving them some canary seed to acouple of hours before they fly and that has seemed to sparked them up a bit. cheers trev

Thanks... I've been flying them pretty hard... I do feed the heck out of them, I mix an 18% gamecock mix with some racing pigeon feed so I know they are getting plenty. My little Grizzle female flew today without any mishaps ( I only flew em once )... the White is injured, it didn't come out with the kit and I didn't push it out, it looks real sore... I move it ( I think it's a male )to an empty breeding pen, I think it'll be OK in time but time will tell. Y'all are probably right, I'm probably stressing em too much ( 3 times a day may be too much )... I'll back off of em some................ I sho like ta see em fly tho.

Trev,

Don't give your young birds canary seeds. Wait tell they are about 9 month old. Giving them Canary seed couple hours b4 fly will cause them to become too active. Too much of it will cause them to bump. Just be careful.

Mark,

Fly them once a day. Don't give them 18% mix. That is too much protine. Give them Wheat/Milo 50/50. Too much protine will cause the birds to fly low. Too much carbs will cause the birds to sky out. Too much feed will cause the birds to fly for hours. Too low in feed will cause them to not want to fly enough. Flying too thirsty will cause them to rolldown when trying to land. You need a balance between Carbs and protine. Too much daily flying will make them racing homers and big time stiffs.
