thanks for reading this. really need some good advice here. i have recently got a hen from a guy who keeps his pigeons in an outdoor aviary with parrots, budgies, doves etc. these birds are kept in the open and are exposed to the cold & rain (it's mid winter now). the guy leaves his grain on the floor all day...

anyway, i had this hen for a week & noticed she barely eats at all. she is all fluffed up (like a ball), shakes her head sometimes (voluntary), lost a lot of weight, has very watery droppings (deep green & cream colour paste), constant body shakes (probably from the cold) & very quiet. she doest NOT sneeze, cough & no watery eye/cere, nothing in the throat, no penguin gesture etc. i know it's not canker, worms, lice, PMV & sour crop.

(i have aussie Dr Colin Walker's Flying Vet book)

i had tried Baycox (at higher dosages) for 5 days & nothing happens. Usually Baycox firms up any watery droppings in 2-3 days. i have tried antibiotic Ornicure (to treat Clamydia, Mycoplasma & other respiratory infections) for 3 days. nothing happens.

does any of you guys have this problem?? viral (herpes) or fungi infection? pls help as she has become extremely thin. i do not intend to cull her as i would like to cure this disease & learn from this experience.

thank you very much.

Sounds kind of like Coccidiosis to me. I'd try either 4n1 or Amprolium.

I dont know whether a strong antibiotic like Baycox will cure coccidiosis. But coccidiosis would be one of my guesses as well.

Unfortunately pigeons can become so ill that the liver stops functioning properly and even if the bacteria are wiped out the pigeon cannot recover. Kevin

I agree it sounds like Coccidiosis. I would treat her with Amprolin what have you got to lose? If you don't you are going to lose her. Is she away from the otrher birds? If not she should be.

I would suggest a round on Corid followed up by a 5 days of Pro-Bios. Provided the bird survives long enough to try this. Usually when you have a bird that's looking that rough, the bird is all but gone. I'm sorry to hear of your situation.

I would use Sulmet....Tony sells it and could get it to you right now....1oz to a gallon of water...This is exactly what Sulmet will cure.

Isolate your bird. Gather some fresh droppings and put them in a bagggie and send them to Foy's for analysis. You'll get specifics for the problem and treatment. I have saved many a bird that way. Otherwise you are shooting completely in the dark. You may get it and you may not. Chances are, without the correct med, you'll loose the bird, based on my personal experience. It's worth the small investment, in case it is something that affects your other birds.
