Hate to bother you guys again with these questions but I am having a problem with bugs crawling inside and outside of the loft area. They are a orange reddish color almost look like a tick but they smash easy and are real small. They seem to hide in the cracks and come out when it is hot. What kind of insecticide can I use and get locally? Would also like some tips on how to manage them and keep them away. I have dusted all birds with dust and are giving them baths in bath salts regularly. Thanks any tips will be appreciated. Mark

Sounds like spider mites. I would spray all crevices, nests, perches, etc... in your loft as soon as possible.

I agree Birdman. Spider mites. Use permethrin spray around pigeons. Seven dust in the corners of the nest boxes. If you can get chinese chalk that works real well. I dont know if anyone can still get it. They had it in California years ago. Kevin

Thanks for the feedback I am in NW Oregon. I think your right they are some sort of mites. I went ahead and treated Kit Boxes inside and out with Permethrin 10% yesterday. It seems to have gotten rid of most of them I will repeat again in two weeks two more times, Does that sound efficiant? I have one other problem, Would it be okay to use the Permethrin in the breeding coops? If this is possible would you know what the ratio would be for treating breeding coops. They are still raising a few babies. Thanks for the info, Mark

I use a brand called Safer. It says it contains 0.102% Pyrethrins for organic gardening. Go to garden centre or home depot and find spray for vegetables containing permectrin or pyrethrins and mix or dilute yours to the same level. Dont spray it on the birds eyes. If you want to spray in breeding coop do this. Remove nestbowls then clean out nest box then spray corners and floor with permethrin or pyrethrin spray. Just spray dont drench. Then return nest bowls with eggs or babies. Then move to next nest box and repeat. If you use nest bowls you can spray underneth them. I think you could use small 1/2" paint brush and brush the stuff into the corners and that would do it. Kevin
